Multiples

Anyone use Proactive Genetics for zygosity testing?

Just wondering if anyone has used Proactive Genetics to test their multiples? If so, did you find out if your twins were identical or fraternal??

We had di/di twin girls and our results came back today as identical! And I am in total shock b/c DH and I don't think they look alike at all!

Re: Anyone use Proactive Genetics for zygosity testing?

  • We used them and our boys are identical too.  I feel like most people that have to question identical or fraternal and use the genetics companies often find they are ID... or you'd not bother testing (because they look so different).  I also think my boys look very different from each other, but I know they don't. To me they do, but to the world at large they look very very similar.

  • I haven't used them but I plan on it because I want to know if mine are ID. I think the u/s tech made a mistake because everything I have read says thin dividing membrane that is often hard to find = ID twins. I was told di/di but I think she was wrong and that I only had 1 placenta not 2. I also think I only had 1 outer sac which is also ID. I'll let you know when I finally do it. FWIW, I think my girls look different to me but I know they aren't because everyone has a hard time telling them apart.

  • We used them everyone was convinced our girls were identical and even there dad mixed them up lol. But I knew and yes they are 100% fraternal now they look nothing alike. Mine were tri tri.

  • We, as parents, can obviously tell them apart.  And so can others that see them frequently.  I guess I was a little apprehensive about the company's accuracy.  On the company's testimonial page almost every one of their clients comments were about them finding out that their twins were identical.  There is not one that confirmed fraternal twins.  So, I started to double guess the results of the test.

So are you saying they were tested and confirmed as identical or fraternal?
  • We used them to confirm my boys were fraternal. They looked very alike in the beginning and the opthamologist in the NICU said they had identical retinal patterns which only happens with IDs. I wish we had waited because they are so obviously fraternal now! But proactive was very quick and easy to work with.

If you have di/di twins, there's still a 20%-ish chance that they're actually ID, even with two placentas and sacs. If the egg splits in the first 1-3 days, two placentas are formed. So, your u/s tech may or may not have made a mistake (I would think that's unlikely, especially with all the extra ultrasounds we get as twin mamas), but even if your LOs were di/di they could still be identical. I'll be excited to see what your eventual test comes back as!

  • We are in the same boat. All of our friends and families and even my DH think our di/di girls are twins. I am the only one who says frat. But they are only 7 weeks, so I told my DH he had to wait until at least 3 mos to test. But I'm so sick of all the speculation, that I kinda just want to test and get it over with. But I do agree with pp, that if you're questioning it, you very well might have id's.
Our placenta was said to be fused. I wonder, sometimes, if it was really just one placenta that hadnt completely split. Is that even possible?
  • We used them and I was told my whole pregnancy they were 100% fraternal. The older they got, the more alike they looked. Even the NICU paperwork said they were unsure whether they were fraternal or ID. My placentas fused so the pathology on it was inconclusive as to whether it was ever 2. They obviously have the same blood type and even their teeth have grown in looking the same (they came in mirroring each other). Now, I look back at pics and have trouble telling who is who even though I have always thought they look so different! Ha! We tested them at 13 months. Proactive was great and even called when the results would be a day later than expected!

  • It's so interesting to me! It's funny how one OB told me they were fraternal and yet others will tell you there is a 90/10 chance of ID's.  We got the test done more so b/c there was a chance not b/c they looked alike.  We could tell them apart after a few days of being home.  We ended up waiting until they were 10 weeks old to do the testing.  It'll be interesting to see the similarities and differences as they get older!
