How soon until you felt "normal" again?

Did it happen shortly after you gave birth? I feel terrible complaining about this because I know I'm very lucky to have made it this far, BUT i'm so uncomfortable right now. I'm going to be induced next week due to hypertension and I just can't wait to A. meet my girls and B. feel like myself again. I'm not naive, I know things are not going to magically feel better the second I give birth, but did you feel a little better just having them out afterwards? I guess it depends on your delivery too, we're hoping for vaginal as both girls are head down but I know that's no guarantee. Like, were you able to sleep better without all the weight in your stomach?
TIA!

Re: How soon until you felt "normal" again?

  • I had a c-section so I didn't totally feel back to myself until 5-6 weeks pp. I will say that the near-constant heartburn disappeared instantly which was so nice.

  • I had a csection and while I was in recovery I just kept touching my sternum and saying, "I feel liek a super model!"

It was instant. Having them out was the best feeling I've EVER felt. There was recovery, to be sure, but it was my easiest recovery by far!

  • Sleep hehe that's funny :P

I had HELLP syndrome. All those symptoms went away as soon as the girls were born. I also had pregnancy carpal tunnel which took a couple weeks to go away. You do feel lighter after they are born though.

  • I felt better instantly.. and only made it to 30 weeks. That being said the "instantly" was after I was off a Magnesium drip and could sit up without passing out, but the issues of being uncomfortable, in pain, heartburn, etc. all diminished almost instantly.... within 2-3 days.

  • LOL, after I wrote this I realized that yes, I will not be sleeping much ;) I guess I meant just felt more comfortable. :) Thanks for the responses!!!

  • Heartburn and reflux went away immediately. But I had a c/s and was completely unprepared for how bad recovery would suck. It was awful. It took me at least 3 weeks to feel halfway normal and now at 6 weeks I feel almost there.

  • I felt a lot better immediately after delivery. I had a c-section at 34 weeks. By two weeks PP, I'd say I felt like a tired but comfortable version of myself. Now, 7 weeks out I can sleep on my belly again!

  • Same as most PPs I felt better immediately. I was in a lot of pain throughout my pregnancy because I had contractions from 24-35 weeks and baby B was lodged in my ribs. But then I had to recover from a c-section so had to deal with that pain for about a week. After 2-3 weeks I felt pretty good. As for sleep, I was exclusively pumping every 3 hours around the clock so that was awful but I noticed that when I did get to sleep for an hour or two it was much better quality of sleep since I couldn't sleep at all while pregnant.

  • Even with having my 2nd csection I felt tremendously better after my boys were born. The csection pain was better to me than being pregnant with 13# of babies crammed into my 5'2 frame. I remember going to recovery and I put my hands on my belly and it was flat! and I could feel ribs! It was lovely just to be able to sleep flat on my back again.I developed carpal tunnel the last month and that has gotten worse unfortunately. I am hoping it goes away by my 6 week checkup or I will be referred to a hand specialist. I am 2 weeks PP now and feel really good besides that. I still have minor pain from my csection at times, but it is nothing compared to my last couple weeks of pregnancy! I am a happy sleep deprived momma now =) My boys slept 3.5 hours between feedings last night and I felt like a new woman! Good luck to you!

  • Overall I felt immediately better. I was able to stop my heartburn meds and the Zofran immediately. I was able to eat and enjoy it. I had an episiotomy though so it was about 3 weeks before I could walk or sit comfortably. I also developed bad carpal tunnel postpartum that even 9 mos later still bothers me at times and despite getting adjusted regularly through my pregnancy and postpartum I still struggle with bad low back pain.

  • Immediately better. But the first night they were up ALL NIGHT long, so I was up 36 hours straight (after one hour of sleep the night before going into labor). Since then, they've slept pretty well. We did 4.5 hours straight last night!

Anyway, sorry, after that it was a new kind of soreness, uncomfortable--ness. I had to sleep on my back because my belly would flop on the bed and feel like it was loose and making my insides hollow. And my legs were sore like I'd done a ton of lunges, but that was probably from the 14 weeks of strict bed rest. The weirdest thing was the verymost front part of "down there" would ache SUPER bad, like almost bring me to my knees. It was so weird.

But honestly switching from the pregnancy aches and pains to the post pregnancy aches and pains is a game changer. It totally makes you forget everything that's bugging you now. Best wishes and hang in there, its worth it!

  • And to feel totally normal and recovered took me less than two and a half weeks--probably quite a bit longer due to the BR.

  • I was delivered early- 34 w 3 d- but I can say I felt immediately better- I could take a full and complete breath! And while I had a C-section (emergency at 7 pm) I did have a wonderful drug induced sleep that first night- my boys were in the NICU. I had some scary complications from drugs the next day- but I felt good once they let me up and started moving around. My guys had to stay in the NICU for 17 days- so I went home with restrictions since my BP was not returning to normal without the help of meds- But I would say by 2 weeks after delivery I was myself- going up and down stairs, driving, and back in my pre-pregnancy clothes.
  • The difficulty moving and breathing went away instantaneously. I had an emergency c-section and even the recovery from that was pretty darn easy. I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight immediately after they were born (and proceeded to lose 20 more, thank you breast feeding!) and felt totally like myself again (minus sleep) about two weeks after they were born. Almost one year later (?! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!) I have never been happier and things are absolutely wonderful. I hope you have a smooth delivery and recovery!
