April 2014 Moms

Hate lying to my parents!!

My parents live about 500 miles from us...they are DYING for a grandchild and we are the first to deliver! We want to tell them in person so we are going to drive to them Labor Day weekend, so still keeping zip for 3 more weeks. I talk to my parents every single day so this is tough! Also, my mom and I were in the middle of training for a marathon together and would keep tabs on our running so now I have to make believe I did an 11 mile run tomorrow (think I will go for 3-4 so I don't feel like I am lying as much).

So, I just called my parents to tell them we decided to come down for Labor Day because my husband got Friday off too. First thing my dad says is "any news??" to which I said "news about what?", he said "nevermind, I meant baby news" (they know we are trying). So, I brushed it off but now don't want them to think anything. Need to keep this out of their minds for now! I was thinking of posting stuff on facebook to drive them away from the idea, like maybe posts about enjoying some wine or going on my marathon long runs lol

Re: Hate lying to my parents!!

  • I've been avoiding my mom which sounds horrible but I know I can't keep it in as soon as I see her! We have a family bday party this weekend, I don't know how I'm gonna hold it in!
    Good luck keeping the secret!

  • Aww that's cute about your dad. I'm sure they won't mind this little white lie. It'll be so much more fun to tell them in person. I'm sure they'll be happy you waited
  • Right, I hate lying...but I know this is worth it and they won't care if I do. I just don't want them to figure it out because they have been waiting for this day for years!!!

  • I think a lot of us are in the same boat. I told my parents right away with my first, and with my last pregnancy, which ended at 6 weeks. This time I don't want to tell anyone until 12 weeks, not even family, because that loss experience was so hard. But I know my mom is going to be offended that I kept this secret from her, because we are so close.

And maybe this is me being crazy, but I can't help but feel that my parents will be disapproving. I mean, I'm in a stable relationship, I have a good job, health insurance, I'm 33 years old, and already have one awesome kid! They watch my son when he's not in preschool, but it's by their own choice, they *demanded* that I not put him in daycare! So I'm afraid they're going to be all "oh no, not another one, what were you thinking?!" because they'll take that burden of childcare on themselves but then blame me. UUUUgh. I love them and they mean well, but UUUgh.
  • I'm lucky that we are going to see my parents tomorrow! And they live far away so we only see them 3 times a year, so this is really nice timing. I'm actually not sure I would have told them right at 4 weeks along, but I certainly can't avoid it in person. The same thing happened last time, actually, except we were getting together with my ILs. So it's nice that this time it's my parents that get the news in person!

  • @curlie whirlie I know what you are feeling my husband and I just confirmed today that we are expecting our third child, feels weird saying that!! Ok, so we are both worried about telling anyone because of there reaction. Right now we only have one income pretty decent one but we just make ends meet, not really any saving going on or extra $$ sitting around. We know they are gonna be negative about it and like what were you thinking!!???? Oh you weren't that's right??? Between negative opinionated sisters and tough dads its not gonna be easy to tell them. I'm waiting til 12 weeks or as close to that as I can, I don't want any negativity around me or my little Appleseed at this point!!! It's hard enough wrapping our heads around it, we are overjoyed God has decided to bless us with a third I just hope financially God has a plan.
  • It's been hard for me not to tell my parents as well but Husband and I know it's a little better to wait several more weeks.  We live in California and my parents live in Connecticut, neither of my siblings have children and when Husband and I announced our engagement the first question my dad asked was "When do I get my first grandchild?" - talk about pressure!  He was just kidding :)  kind of...

Anyway, I understand the feeling.. it's hard to keep it in.  Hang in there!
  • We've already told everybody. We told this early with numbers two and three as well.

Good luck keeping quiet! I know I couldn't do it ~ I suck at keeping secrets.

  • I totally feel your pain! With my first, I waited a week to tell my mom.  It doesn't seem that bad but we are INCREDIBLY close and were working together at the time!  They will be so excited to hear your news.

  • I'm super close to my dad (we also talk every day). I live in Texas and he lives in New York. I'm an only child. You know how I plan on telling him? When he visits for thanksgiving and he sees the bump! This will be a total shock to him :) (no dad I just ate a big burger) sooo tough not sharing the news earlier though
  • I told my parents early and lost the baby. I am still telling them this weekend because I need their prayers for this LO!! My mom is my biggest fan so if something happens again, I need her comforting support along with DH's!

  • I can totally understand! With my first pg we told at 5 weeks and then 3 weeks later it was over :( With ds we told at 10 weeks bc I had I go to the ER but we would've waited. Now we are hoping to tell at 12 weeks with this one but we are going away with them for a week in just two weeks! Wish me luck!!! Lol
