Experienced moms- scarring experiences?

Re: Experienced moms- scarring experiences?

  • I'm not sure why I came in here, morbid curiosity I guess. I have to say I was taking all the stories in stride until @TallAsh mentioned her sister... wow!

But now I have a question: to all those who said they had to 'wait' to push because their doctors/midwives weren't there.... how the hell do you do that? I would think if my body wanted to push I'd just be like "damn you, I'm getting this baby out RIGHT NOW." Doctor or no doctor.

Oooh, and another question: how long does it take to get the placenta out once you give birth? Is it easier at that point?

My doctor was sleeping in the next room so that wasn't an issue for me, but even though I had an epi I could feel some stuff and had the urge to push and it felt wonderful to do so. I cannot imagine having to hold it! Also my placenta came out almost immediately after, within three to five minutes I'd say.

  • I was 6+ cm when I finally went into labor, got a perfect epi around 5 pm ( I could feel the pressure of the contractions, but not the pain, and could move my legs), pushed 9 times based on when I felt the need to push, and my daughter was born 11 minutes after I started pushing. Despite my quick labor and delivery, I had what they called "barely" a second degree tear, and while it was uncomfortable afterwards (squeeze bottles to "wash" after going to the bathroom are soooo fun, I tell you), I was feeling pretty good about a week later.  It probably took a couple of months, though, before I felt more normal down there.

I never had natural on-my-own contractions the entire pregnancy or labor & delivery so maybe that helped? I never had the urge to push, the dr. and nurse had to tell me when to do it, so that may be why it wasn't so hard to stop. Although DS had a super jacked up head shape for awhile bc of all of it!

I was worried about the placenta part but for me it was no big deal at all. They handed me the baby right away and we did skin-to-skin for an hour. While I snuggled with him the dr. pulled out the placenta, I never even had to push at all and stitched me up (which I couldn't feel due to the epi). My hubs made the mistake of looking as the placenta and other fun stuff was being pulled out and he almost passed out!

Haha, thanks. I will have to warn DH not to look at that part.

That's great to hear that it's much easier - I was reading on birth and then I came to the part about the placenta and I'm all "What do you mean there's more after baby comes out!?" It sort of freaked me out a bit.

Haha. I was the same way! But honestly, I didn't even realize it was happening. By that point you are so mesmerized with your LO and the fact that this amazing little human came out of your body that even if you had to push, you wouldn't be paying attention! IMO, the worst part is after delivery. They have you stand up (I went in the bathroom) and clean you off and it's pretty nasty. And the first poop after... Ugh! Those were the things no one warned me about. But again, you are so happy that it makes it all worth it!

  • I had a very uneventful pregnancy, and labor and delivery.

My water didn't break... it leaked so I had to be induced.

I got the epidural early because they were going to start pitocin and I know it would get real, pretty quick.

    Pushed for 15-20 minutes.

Total labor.... I checked in the hospital about 11am after they got me in the labor room they put a pill in my cervix to to get me to 100% effaced and then between 6 pm and 7 pm got the epidural and the pitocin started and baby was here by 1:30 am, so 6-7 hours of actual contractions..not bad for first pregnancy.

WORST PART... i had a 2nd degree tear and they let an intern stitch me up under the doctors supervision of course. It took forever and the epidural was wearing off, so it hurt worse then most of my labor.... although they did a good job, I would ask this time if the same should happen that the dr. do it.

  • I'll share the good and the bad, because there was both.

I had only 12 hour labor with DS but it progressed quickly, so the bulk of that was between 8 cm and 10 cm.  My water broke before I ever had a contraction.  I had a home labor and birth and DS was born at 9 lbs.  He got stuck at the cervix before I started pushing and the midwives had to manually move the lip of the cervix so his head would come out.  From what I understand, he came at a bit of an odd angle.  I pushed for 2 hours and 58 minutes, and I understand that 3 hours is the maximum they will allow you to push.  It was exhausting and painful.  Since I pushed for so long, my midwives had warm compresses and oil to massage my vagina, so I only had a minor tear.    I blew out my asshole pushing though and since it was my birthday 3 days after I gave birth, I asked for only Preparation H as a present (and I got it!  Best birthday present ever!).

I spent a lot of time laboring in my bath, with the shower going and it was heavenly.  And I remember feeling that labor felt like trauma, and I swore up and down that I was done having children but as soon as Owen arrived and they put him in my arms I thought that I couldn't wait to do it again.  It was so worth every minute.

My entire pregnancy, I told FI not to look down there while I was pushing. I'm super self conscience and for one thing I didn't want him to see me pooping all over and for another, I was very scared he would never find me sexually attractive anymore.

I guess he started looking because I just hear him shouting "Oh my god! There's so much hair!" to which I screamed at him to stop looking. He ended up witnessing the whole thing and, because DS's intestines were outside of his body, he ended up running to the bathroom and puking. Loudly. Which in turn made me puke all over a nurse.

  • 2 hours of labor NO TEAR :)

I didn't stop. I physically could not. I thought with an epi I would need more direction, not feel much...but I knew immediately when I needed to start pushing. I told everyone to get out and get a nurse.

  • I woke the morning before I went into labor with what felt like menstrual cramps that just kept getting worse throughout the day. That afternoon I finally went into the hospital and they sent me home and told me I wasn't in labor (bullshit I wasn't). I went home and ended up being in so much pain I went back about 1 or 2 in the morning, and they admitted me. I ended up getting an epidural right away. I am confused when people say their epidural wore off, because I just had a button next to me, that would administer more whenever I needed it. The nurse told me that there was no way it could wear off. Anyway, they stared giving me poticin a few hours labor. The doctor only came into check on me once that whole time. They told me I was going to start pushing at 8 in the morning, then they told me the doctor was running late and I wouldn't start pushing until 8:30. I didn't even see anyone until after noon with no explanation, no one even came into check on me. At about noon they came in again and had me lay on a big exercise ball on my stomach, I can't remember why at the time.

They still weren't having my push. At about 2:00pm the nurse came in and said the baby's heart rate keeps dropping really low and they need to get him out right away. Umm where have you been the last few hours then!?! The doctor didn't even come in the first hour and a half I was pushing, it was just a nurse and a student. Everytime I would push DS heart rate would drop really low and we would have to wait for it to come back up. I remember crying and being so scared to push because I could hear his heart rate dropping everytime I did. They told me that the baby couldn't take much more of this. I was so scared. Then the doctor FINALLY came in and said they had an OR ready for me. She said they were going to try the vacuum and if that didn't work they were going to have to go to the OR. Well the damn vacuum wasn't working properly and didn't suck. I remember my husband yelling at the doctor to get another F***ing vacuum then, but she didn't. She told me I had one last try and if he didn't come out on this push they were going to bring me to the OR. Luckily he came out on the last push and they NICU nurses whisked him off right away. They thought the cord was wrapped around his neck and they were surprised when he came out that it wasn't.

I had some tearing and had to have a catheter put in because I was too swollen to pee.

I am terrified to go through labor again. Luckily I have moved since then and will be at a different hospital.

  • 4th degree tear. 8 months of healing. Horrible horrible horrible! This time I will not be doing "coached" pushing. And I've even considered a c section. Lots of scar tissue down there and even the life side I feel some numbness during sex. I love my daughter... But damn! They never tell you just how painful postpartum could be.
  • Oh.. And I still have back pain where my epidural was.

I had to wait while the midwives did a shift change and they also had to get the vacuum. I had an epi though so waiting wasn't as bad. I felt the pressure but the urge to push was manageable. As for the second question, my placenta came out pretty much right after without me really knowing my body worked it out. I didn't even know it happened.

Good choice going to a different hospital. It sounds like they did so many things that are against normal policy. We could never control our epi, we couldn't get out of bed once we had an epidural, they did not explain ANYTHING to you... Just yikes. You poor thing.
  • I wouldn't call my birth experience scarring but it wasn't very fun.

I worked my normal 8 hour shift on my due date, came home and went to bed at 10pm, I was feeling pretty normal. At midnight I woke up to my water breaking and my first contraction. My contractions were very regular from the begining and by 4am they were feeling really intense so I told DH we should go to the hospital because the baby was probably going to be here soon. Bahahahahaha, oh naive FTM that I was. I got to the hospital and was a whopping 1cm dilated but they had to admit me since my water had broken.

Things started getting REALLY intense around noon. I couldn't talk or walk through my contractions, the pain was so freaking intense. My progress was pretty slow though, every few hours I'd only be like 1 more cm dilated. Finally at 8pm  2 nurses came to talk to me about pit (I was adamant about being med free). I had been hanging out at 9.5cm dilated with just a lip of cervix for the last couple hours and they told me that having a small dose of pit would help clear the lip of cervix so I could finally start pushing. I agreed to it, at that point I was done and just wanted the baby out. 4 hours of pushing later and my 10lb 2oz baby boy was born at 12:55am, a lovely 25 hours after my labor had started.

Honestly what made it worse was really just the timing. By the time I made it to my hospital room with my baby I had been awake for 45 hours, had put in a full day at work, then went through 25 hours of labor and had had nothing to eat for the previous 24 hours. I was utterly spent, sore all over, mind numbingly exhausted and oh hey by the way, heres a newborn for you to take care of.

  • I had a C-Section with DS and overall I would say it was an okay experience.  The worst parts:

1.) The catheter being put in prior to the procedure (OUCHHHHH!!!)

2.) The next day when they make you stand up for the first time (I cried so hard that no sound or tears came out)

3.) The constipation (I didn't use the restroom for a #2 for almost 6-7 days) When I finally tried, it was so painful and agonizing that I cried like a child.  OMG
