Driving me bananas

My DD is 5 months old today and she is absolutely driving me crazy. She has no problem falling asleep on me, near me, with me, but as soon as I go to move her to her crib her eyes pop wide open. I have tried moving her to crib when she's completely passed out, when she is semi-sleepy (awake but drowsy), wide awake. I've tried giving her the pacifier, rubbing her belly, rubbing her head, singing a lullaby and in despiration i tried letting her CIO once and she ended up crying so hard she was hyperventalating. Tried putting her in the car and driving around, tried putting her in the ergo and walking around. Nothing works, the kid freaks out. I want her to get used to sleeping in her crib and not on ME all the time, as I can not get anything done and It would be nice to get a longer shower in there sometimes. The problem is that she is exhausted and I can tell by looking at her and cranky because she keep missing her naps when I try to put her in the crib. Also, when she doesn't nap well during the day nighttime is a nightmare as she is too overtired to even get to sleep at a reasonable hour. All she wants is to sleep on me and I can't do it anymore. I need some down time too and I never can get it, plus if she sleeps on me and I move it wakes her up. Anyone else going through a tough nap stage?

Re: Driving me bananas

  • My little man has been a terrible napper since day one!! He never naps in his crib, I have to lay in bed with him to get him to nap & once he's out I'll try to get up and he's awake either as soon as I'm up or within 10 minutes. Plus now he's being super grouchy lately anyway so it's been driving me up the walls. He also hates being held by anyone but me, so I'm just waking up each day in more and more pain.

  • Well, at least we aren't alone! Sorry you are having a rough time too! She totally notices when I lay with her and move too. I think she can smell me and feels the warmth go away too. It's so hard! Ugh.
  • I'm sure you have, but in case not ... Have you tried the "5-S's" from Happiest Baby on the Block?

My baby needs white noise to help her nap ("Shh-ing"), and needs to be swaddled to sleep any time of the day/night.  When it's really bad, we have to throw the swing in there along with her binky, too.

I wouldn't say she is "colicky" (although some might), she just needs help to get to sleep.

  • Oh yes, we have tried those. Sometimes rocking helps sometimes not, but as soon as I lay her down she is pissed. She no longer can go in her swing as she's too big/heavy for it to make the swinging motion. Ha. And she hates the pacifier! Spits it right out, although if she's really really tired she may take it...mostly she spits it out or takes it out. She's a little stinker. And the shushing does nothing for Hershey's all like why are you making noises at me and not picking me up? Ahh, this week has been really rough.
  • She's not colicky , although does have a dairy intolerance. We BF and I haven't had dairy since she was first born, so that's not a problem.
  • A well rested baby sleeps better (oddly enough). Perhaps try doing whatever it takes to get her enough sleep for a couple days then try something new.
  • My kid hates her crib. Trying to get her to sleep in it was stressing me out waaay too much. So now our little family of three sleeps together. It's awesome! Not sure if you're in to that sort of thing, but it's working for us.

  • Sleep sense program!!! It gave me back my freedom at 3 months and he's now 5 months old and sleeping like a champ during the day and night in his crib without my "help." My LO was colicky and I to have cut dairy and wheat and he spits up a lot less and is less gassy. It works for us. ;)
  • DS sleeps in his crib at night. And lately, will sleep in his carseat for naps. He keeps changing what works.... But we are in the middle of moving right now, so sleeping not on me is great for now. I'll take what I can get.
