Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Mothers helper pay rate?

I'm hiring a 14 year old, like-family friend to come over 2 or 3 times a week for a few hours to watch my 7 month old while I do things around the house as well as work from home a bit. How much do you think I should pay her per hour? I was thinking $5...?

  • Depends on where you live...you could ask her what she would like to get paid.  I would think $7-8/hr.

  • If she is willing to work for that. When I was 16 I was making $8 an hour, and probably wouldn't have worked for $5. I would say whatever she will agree to.

  • I used to make $5 over 15 years ago.

We pay our babysitter $12, although she is in her 20s and has some experience. $8-10 sounds reasonable to me.

  • I think $5/hour (cash) for a 14 year old sounds okay.

  • They don't have to pay taxes, and there are few jobs for 14 yos. I think $5/h is fine if she's okay with it. For a neighbour I babysat for $10 a day in the summer right up til I was 18 because they didn't have much money, it didn't interfere with my evening job and it was fun :)

  • I was paid $10 an hour when I was in high school, like 8 years ago.
  • For her age I think $5-7 is fine, I wouldve been stoked! I was babysitting my cousins for free at that age lol

I would say $5. Especially since you will be there the whole time. With that being said I also know that pay for this kind of job differs depending on your area. For instance in Florida I probably would have made about $8/hr but in Ohio for Mother's Helper I would probably only make $4/hr - $5/hr. I would also take into consideration are you expecting them to make and or feed your child any meals, or anything else that requires more effort on their part. It is stressful to watch someones child while their watching or just in the other room. Not only because the parent can watch your every move if they want to but also because your child knows you are home and may fuss and try to get to you the whole time which will create stress on the babysitter because she won't want you to be bothered and she will feel like you may think she isn't helping and is just a burden if you have to intervene. So I think that should be considered as well when you are deciding on a pay rate.
  • We paid ours $7.

I totally agree with this. I am 36 and was paid $5/hour 20 years ago.

I pay my babysitters $15 an hour, and that is cheap for my city. $8-10 is reasonable for her age.

  • I would say $8-10 is fair. $5 is a little low
