Occupational Therapy?

Can someone please explain what exactly Occupational Therapy is and how it would be applied to a 2 year old? DD was diagnosed with Infantile Spasms last May (11 mos) and was placed on Vigabatrin and Prednisolone, both causing a slight delay. She's been spasm free 14 months and fully off medication 9 months. She's currently being seen by a Developmental Specialist as well as a Speech Therapist and has come a long way. I'm just wondering what OT will help with. It was suggested to us because we are on a wait list to be assessed by The Ottawa Childrens Treatment Center.

Thanks in advance <3

Re: Occupational Therapy?

  • An OT helps develop fine motor skills.  In infants OT and PT are pretty similar as their motor skills are still so basic.

As a child ages these skills start to separate into groups of fine and gross motor.  Fine motor involves a pincer grasp, pointing, grasping, manipulating objects, crossing midline, opposing midline action, wrist rotation, self feeding, using utensils, holding a pencil, cutting with scissors, picking objects up and putting them in different sized canisters, removing objects from canisters, activating toys with the correct movement (pressing, pushing, twisting, etc).  They can also work on a lot of sensory input with brushing, compression, etc.  Our OT's also do a lot of hand massage because my boys like to keep their hands fisted.

This is what we've experienced in OT with my DS1 (3yo) and DS2 (14 mo)
To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

I just watched a video the other day that explains it well, I think.

  • What the other ladies said.  For us, OT addresses the most wide rang of thinks my DS needs help with so its where we spend the majority of our therapy time.

Fine motor skills, hand writing, core strength, feeding, sensory issues, crossing mid line, adaptive skills.
  • Ah, you ladies are brilliant! Thank you so much. I was trying to look it up online and nothing was making sense. Thank you again!  :x
