Are any of you having biophysical profiles?

My drs office just called called today and told me they want bpp done tomorrow because of the results of yesterday's nst. Are any of you having them done? What have your results been? It makes me nervous because now I think something may be wrong with the baby, and my husband is leaving the state from tomorrow untill Monday.

Re: Are any of you having biophysical profiles?

  • I have had to have them done 3 times after my NST. Usually do to her lack of movement or her heart rate dropping. Every time they have been fine. I do not know how far along you are, but I've had them at 33, 34, and 36 weeks. Each time she scored a 6/8 because they couldn't monitor her lung movement because it wasn't developed enough which is normal. So, if they say something about not being able to measure their breathing, I would imagine that is what they are meaning.

My doctor explained it that along with the NST, it is just a preventative measure. They are able to see a lot more and check the development better with the bpp, it doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.

  • I have them every other week. They just measure baby, do a movement count, check for breathing, check fluid levels and they might check the blood flow through the cord.

  • I am having them every week with a NST until I deliver. Like PP I was told it is a preventative measure (I've had high BP for the last month) For me they check heart rate, amniotic fluid level, bladder to make sure the kidneys are functioning properly, and I'm sure other things, that's all I remember them telling me. It's very quick, only takes about 10 minutes.
  • From what I understand, I will have one if I am still pregnant at my appt next week. By then I will be almost 41 weeks.

  • I have on booked for Friday. I'll be 41weeks + 1day and it is routine practice to monitor once overdue.
  • Am am 37 wks 5days and will be having them weekly starting tomorrow, because of my GD. It just scares me that he may not be ok.

I've been having them twice a week since 38 weeks, originally because of high blood pressure. My blood pressure has since been good but now that I'm "overdue" she still wants them twice a week because she's not used to having a mom who refuses induction just because the doc says so. I'm actually ok with them because it's nice knowing that baby girl is just fine, especially since her movements have slowed down now that she is so cramped in there!

Did you pass the NST? Try not to worry too much about the BPP. I think if there was a real reason to worry they'd have done an ultrasound immediately and not waited two days. Try to look at it as a way to reduce your fears that all is okay. My guess is that it is more to do with your GD than it does with anything else and I'd imagine it's routine at some point with GD. Good luck!

    Are you diet controlled?

I am diet controlled and haven't had to have any. My midwife told me that they basically treat GD diet controlled patients just like any other "normal" pregnancy. Now, if I get to my due date, they will do a BPP and NST just to make sure everything still looks okay. If I pass my due date, they will only let me go to 41 weeks.

  • My doctors office only does them for normal pregnancies after 41 weeks. That's not much help.... I'm sure if the doctor didn't express any concern, though, that it's just part of the normal protocol. If you're nervous, I would call the nurse at the office and just ask for all the details!
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • I had to have one with DD. Her heart rate at my appointment was wonky so they sent me for a NST. Two hours later they still weren't happy and sent me for a BPP.

She was fine and was born two days later. (Came early on her own accord) She just liked messing with everyone's head.

She was also a whole 2 pounds smaller than the u/s tech and OB who read the results estimated.

  • I'm supposed to have two next week bc I'll be 41w3 days and then again on 41w6.
  • I had one a few weeks ago due to bleeding. I am all for making sure the baby is okay after that scare. They check the placenta, blood flow through cord, some major organs, heart, heart rate, etc. etc. I am sure everything will be okay though. Just a precaution most of the time.

I had them due to GD. I was not diet controlled but rather took insulin at night to assist with fasting numbers. In the end I had low fluids which was caught on the BPP.

  • I'm having one done Monday if baby hasn't come yet. I'll be 41+1 then. They're checking placenta status.

  • I have had them done a few times since they had me come in for weekly appointments for my GD. Results from them have always been good. They have accompanied the NST and ultrasound I have done at the weekly appointments. If something is wrong, I am sure the issue will be addressed. The whole purpose of the biophysical profile is to make sure the baby is getting what he or she needs in the womb and is doing ok.

  • Yes, I am diet controlled. They said my nst was ok, but not really what they would have liked to see him do. They had to give me cold water to drink to get him to move.

  • I started having them last Thursday and will continue 2x a week until I have dd. my BP is high and she is measuring small. They are done at the high risk dr and when I met with him about the results he explained to me that it is to make sure everything is ok. Which so far it is and if at any point things change they will deliver dd. I happy that they are being fine because it makes me worry less with the problems I'm having. I want this lo to cook as long as possible but obviously want her safe.

  • I had one this week after my nst. Like pp said they were looking for measurements and certain movements within a thirty minute period. I was 39 weeks and 2 days. I think they did one on me because I am over 40?

  • I had them done weekly for the last couple of weeks of pg.
  • I am happy to report that my bpp went well today :) I have to go back next week, but I'm not stressed about it anymore.

  • I had one today after my NST. There was a drop in LO's heart rate and they just wanted to take a look. Heart was fine but it took a lot to get him moving. But in the end all is good.
