how are you introducing new flavors of solids?

My son is six months old, and had been eating one meal of oatmeal cereal since about 4.5 months. The doc has given us the go ahead to do two feedings of purees a day henceforth, and I'm just curious how others did this. Some suggestions that I've heard include introducing "yucky" veggie flavors like green beans and peas first so baby doesn't get hooked on sweets; giving three or four days for each new flavor; don't mix flavors yet; etc. We tried green beans today and he was skeptical, but took them down! :) so do I do green news for three days before trying something new like peas, squash or carrots? Just looking for others to share their experiences! I was inclined to try BLW but doc says wait til 8 or 9 months for table foods.

  • That's green BEANS. NOT green "news!" Damn phone!

  • I started with avocado then went to carrots then to apples then to peaches. I'm not really going in any order. I want to try Green Beans soon and peas.. I think there is no magic order just do what you want. I'm making my own so those were the things I saw right off to make :)

  • I started with avocado as well. We're on carrots this week which E isn't too ecstatic about (I don't think she likes how sweet they are) and will probably do squash/zucchini next week. Whatever's readily available.

  • I've read that it doesn't really matter what you introduce first in terms of fruit vs veggie. We introduce one new food every 3 days and kind of alternate fruit vs. veggie. DS eats oatmeal and fruit in the morning and oatmeal and veggie in the evening. We repeat exposures to ones he doesn't care for because it can take time for them to warm up to new tastes and textures.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  •  we did avocados, then sweet potatos, then bananas, then peas. no real order i just always introduce new foods in the morning in case of an allergic reaction you have all day to watch for it. and i wait 4 days in btwn foods as well. i think saturday we will try carrots.
  • My doctor suggested alternating fruit/veggie and waiting 4 days between introducing a new food so that's what we've been doing and it's working out great so far!

  • We're doing one a week. Mostly because we're poor and I'm making our baby food so I only have to make food once a week. We started yesterday with pureed sweet potato thinned with breast milk. We'll be doing that the rest of this week. Next week is avocado. After that will be peas, and after that will be carrots. I'm trying to keep the big beta-carotene pretty separate since she is a lot like me as a baby so far and I apparently turned myself orange as an infant lol.

  • Okay, so for those who stated they left three or four days between... do you feed that same veggie or fruit for all of those four days or just for the first day and then go three days with NO solids? This is the part of the instructions that I don't understand.

  • I feed the same thing three days in a row :-)

  • Yes, I feed the same food for four days straight before moving on to the next!

  • Feed the same food for three days straight - it's so that you can see if they have any allergic reactions, digestive issues, etc.

We don't do any fruits - or other sweets - until their first birthday. We stick with oatmeal, green/yellow veg, meats (pureed first, then very tender, bite sized pieces), and minimal cereals/pasta/cheese when they start chewing efficiently. It isn't just about avoiding a preference for sweets, it's about not adding excess sugars to their diet. We'd prefer that they get their carbohydrates from veg and dairy, and not from fructose. Once they hit a year old, we let them have whole fruits in the low-fructose content and low-glycemic index, once every day or two - things like strawberries, nectarines, blackberries/raspberries. "Sweets" like cakes/cookies/jellies/candy/ice cream are a once a month sort of thing, and not til they're at least a year old (their birthday cakes are usually their first "sweet").

  • We started with bananas and moved to avocados and he doesn't like them. I thought it was a fluke but he's done this 3 times now. I didn't realize they already have a preference.

Also, I know this sounds silly but I feel like I don't know how often I'm supposed to feed LO. Usually I'm feeding him solids only once a day only about 2 tablespons because he's new at this. When do I move to feeding more and more often?

Each of my boys eats one 4oz (i.e. stage 2) jar of veg every day, and about 2oz of infant oatmeal (I mix it in empty stage 1 jars). I split both of those into two feedings, so they eat half of their veg and half of their cereal mid morning, and the other half in the evening. Simon is 15lbs 2oz and James is 14lbs even. Our pedi says to aim for 3 feedings a day by about 9mo, and just to offer as much as they want to eat - don't force food if they're not hungry, but don't deny them food unless they are showing obvious problems sensing when they're full.
