Anatomy Scan Question

I feel a little dumb right now asking this question.. but I was talking with a friend who recently had a baby and she mentioned that at her anatomy scan it was a 3D ultrasound.  I am a little confused if I actually had an anatomy scan or not.  3 weeks ago I had an ultrasound which we found out the sex of our baby ( I was 20 weeks then).... however it wasnt 3D and I didnt get to see the doctor afterwards because he had an emergency c-section he had to go to.  I have an appointment Monday and I plan to ask.  As a FTM I feel so lost and not sure what everything is that they do (blood work, etc).  The nurse did call back later that day and said the doctor reviewed the US and he said everything looks great.  So I just left it as that knowing everything is fine.  I defintely need to ask more questions... starting Monday.

Re: Anatomy Scan Question

  • My anatomy scan was not 3D. It was a normal u/s. My doc does not do 3D.

Mine was not 3D and I didn't see my doctor for another 2 weeks. It was an anatomy scan. Some places go more in depth than others.
  • Ours was a 2-D ultrasound.  If during the ultrasound they checked everything (heart, brain, organs, blood flow, bone length, counting fingers/toes/arms/legs, etc. then that was your anatomy scan.  I did not have any blood drawn at this appointment and my visit with my doctor was very quick (blood pressure, weight, and baby's heartbeat.

  • We only saw our little girl in 3D for a few shots of the face. Honestly, I kind of wish I hadn't seen it. It looked really weird. Maybe that should go in the UO thread...

  • Anatomy scans, IME, have always been a regular 2D ultrasound. Now this last one I had, they had 3D capability so she took a few 3D shots for us at the end.
  • Well I am guessing I did have one.  As she did check the heart, blood flow and length of bones, etc.. was just a little thrown off when she said her anatomy scan was 3D... that would have been neat.  I will double check with the doctor Monday.  Thanks for your reponses. :)
  • We didn't get any 3D during the anatomy scan. The baby was very active the entire time, so we couldn't even peek at his face. It's definitely a boy though!

We had the same issue. He was wearing the placenta like a hat, so the 3D photos looked ridiculous. Reminded me of the guy from fat albert. And yes, I do realize that cartoon is culturally insensitive so sorry if this offends.

  • This is my third baby and I have never had a 3D ultrasound. Anatomy scans are in 2D. You wouldn't want 3D yet, anyway. Babies are not very cute until they chunk up a bit, which doesn't happen until third tri.

  • It really just depends on the machine they are using. Some machines have the ability to do 3D and some don't. At my office they have 3 machines that can do it but they don't turn it on unless they feel it is medically necessary because PTs were continually demanding it. My MIL is a U/S specialist so she usually turns it on for a few minutes for us, but to be honest... at 20 weeks there isn't enough fat on the baby. She said the best is around 25-29 weeks, they have enough fat on their bodies that they look normal and aren't too cramped at that point either.

I just had mine today, and the whole thing was a standard ultrasound, but she flipped it to 3D right at the end to give us a few face shots.  I don't think they can tell as much in 3D--bone lengths, brain and heart checks, etc.
This. Just had mine on Monday and they did the same thing.
