Babies: 3 - 6 Months

constipation-starting solids (4 months old)

Ok, so my son just had his 4 month old check up and the Dr gave us the ok to start cereal in the evenings/mornings. We gave him our ped recommended amount and today he is plugged up. My kid poops like clock work once a day. He is very irritable and crying hysterically. He is straining a lot and just crying while he tries to push. i have been doing bicycle kicks, took his temp rectally, and will be giving him a warm bath shortly to see if any of that will help ease it out.
Do you think it would be ok to introduce prunes even though we just started him on cereal? I don't want to make him more miserable by adding another food suddenly.

Re: constipation-starting solids (4 months old)

  • The majority concencus would be to call your pedi and explain the situation to them to see if they could recommend anything.

Personally though, when we introduced rice cereal to DS, the same thing happened to him. we ended up adding a tsp. of prunes to his rice cereal to help "unclog" him. We will be starting DS2 on spoon feeding rice cereal in 2wks but we will not be adding the prunes to the rice cereal mixture since he is already on a stool softner for constipation.

  • My son, now 8m, was constipated also. Tried oatmeal and prunes , which seemed to help a bit, but not much. (Fyi, rice, appled, carrots are suppose to cause constipation) Pedi suggested prune juice amd baby hated the flavor, wouldnt drink it. About a month ago , I read on a message board to give him flax seed oil. Quarter teaspoon. Omg. So much poo came out -I think baby lost a pound in just poo!!! Lol. After giving it to him that one time, baby has been pooing regularly! Yay. Your baby is younger. Asked the pedi, otherwise wait until 6m for solids. Good luck!
  • babies don't need solids this early. If he's having issues, I'd stop
  • Your DS may not be ready for solids yet.  However, if you want to continue try oatmeal.  I think the other options is barley, but I am not positive.  My pedi specifically mentions that rice cereal may be constipating for some children.  You also don't need to start with cereal, you can start with bananas or avocados.

  • If he will not poop, add 1 tsp. of dark karo syrup to his bottle. You can do it up to 3 times a day but after one bottle it will take a couple hours and then he should be able to poop.

OP please ask your pedi before doing this.
My pedi is the one who told me I wouldn't just do it to see if it works

I work with a ton of Pedi's and they are anti Karo syrup but not all of them are. I guess these Pedi's scare me when it comes to certain things.

Please dont do the Karo syrup. i was advised by an ER doctor to do that or prune juice with water to help DS2 poop. I opted to do an oz of prune juice mixed with 4oz of formula. After a week of prune juice & formula, his GI doc said that all though Karo works, they do no suggest giving it to babies so young, our pedi agreed.
