Babies: 3 - 6 Months

2 questions..(ftm)

First question: My 4 month old son, LOVES to watch tv!!! I always try to turn him away or play with him away from the tv, but he still wants to turn his head to watch it....Is tv really that bad????

Second question: I am reading a lot of moms on this board introducing there babies to rice cereal or oatmeal at around 4 1/2 or 5 months of age. Why? Just for practice??? Do they really need it this early??

Thanks!!!!

There have been some pretty loaded posts about TV. You have to decide what is right for your family, but I personally do not want my 3.5 month old watching tv so I turn it off during the day. If I am watching tv then I am not interacting with my little one, which is so important for his development. TV also distracts children from play which is vital to development. Can you shield your LO from every screen in the world all the time for two years? Probably not. Still, it's important for me personally when I am at home to turn it off during LO 's playtime so that I can focus on my son.

You will also get a lot of mixed answers to your second question. Traditionally, it was recommended that children start with cereal at 4ish months and then move onto purées and then finger foods after that. Now there have been some studies that show links between starting food earlier and an increased risk of food allergies and being overweight later in life. Different doctors make different recommendations, so I would read up on it and discuss with your pedi. I will personally wait until around 6 months with my DS. Nutritionally, he doesn't NEED solids at all, so I don't really see a need to start so early with him.

These 2 questions can't possibly be real! The 2 most heated topics on these boards in one post....smh.

OP, do research on the pros/cons of TV and make a decision on your own. Ask your pedi about what solids to start with and when.

That's what I was just thinking......... If you don't know if LO should be watching tv then either turn it off or ask your ped. I can't even touch the cereal question right now. :-O

  • Telling OP her questions can't possibly be real isn't helping, you just sound rude and quite frankly b*tchy! We are or at one time in our lives FTM's and ALL had questions. If you don't have any helpful advise why feel the need to post snarky answers???? Ugh.

    Anyways!

OP, I don't think tv is that bad, I mean as long as your LO isn't glued to the tv 24/7. Babies are curious and tv has sound, colors, motion can you blame them??
As for the cereal, my dr says yes, it's more for practice. But it is fun to introduce solids to them! There reaction is priceless!

  • DD is 21 weeks today and I let her try rice cereal for the first time. She had no issues and seemed to love it-she had about a tablespoon mixed with little over a oz of formula. But, she shows all the signs of being ready and wanting solids and I just figured I'd try.  She immediately opened her mouth when I offered the spoon, and basically sucked the mixture (it's VERY soupy at first) off of the spoon.

As far as TV-my DD loves the crap out of it too.  I know her dad parks himself in front of it when he's watching her and holds her while watching sports, so there's that. I personally don't watch it when I'm with her or have it on when she's around but I can't say that everyone in her life does this.

  • Why would you reply to a discussion board post asking for advice with rude and belittling comments? I'm so glad that when you had your first babies you knew the perfect answer for everything. "I can't even touch the cereal question right now." -- then why post?? If you are that desperate for someone to make fun of, please feel free to start your own discussion and not make others feel inferior. A few spelling and grammatical errors are the least of my worries as a full time working mom. I'm here to communicate with other moms that can identify with what I'm going through. Please focus all of that negative energy somewhere else.

She was asking literally the most controversial questions on The Bump. I'm sure if she was a regular poster which I'm sure she is, she would know the answers to those questions. The Bump isn't all puppies and rainbows. She asked questions and I answered them honestly. I didn't go out of my way to make her feel inferior or stupid just to make fun of her. I was being honest. Speaking as a working mom myself, that isn't an excuse to not use proper spelling and punctuation. I work full time and go to school, yet I still punctuate and spell.

  • Also, the OP asked the same question about solids less than a week ago and got a lot of responses. If you are this curious about it, you should really speak to your baby's pediatrician.

  • Oh and by the way, our pediatrician told us to start my daughter on rice cereal in her bottle at 2 1/2 weeks because she was taking way too much breast milk (I was an exclusive pumper, so I knew how much she was getting). At 4 months, she had doubled in weight from birth, was sitting up very well with support, and was showing interest in mommy and daddy's food, which are all signs that baby is ready for solids. I started her out with carrots, and she did great! I also have the TV on for a couple of hours in the evening, and we have our daughter in the room with us, but typically spend our time focusing on her toys or talking and bonding with her. My daughter's pediatrician says her weight is perfect, and she is very advanced socially and developmentally. It's all about what's best for your baby! :) I'm sure there will be a ton of judgmental thoughts/comments about our decisions, but I could care less. I know my baby is happy, healthy, and thriving. There is no perfect way to be a parent.

And if you don't get to see or talk to your doctor often, you should get Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to 5 Years by the American Association of Pediatrics. My daughter's doctor gave it to us, and it's been a GREAT reference, and it's written by knowledgeable doctors, not doctors just trying to come up with the newest and most innovative (and usually ridiculous) ways to raise a child. Of course we have had to do things differently than the book advises, but no baby will be "by the book". That's what makes them so entertaining! :) Good luck!

Wow, your awesome! Thanks so much! I will defiantly check that book out! Yeah, my son is showing interest in our food and can support his head really well, so i'm thinking i will start him off with some rice cereal or sweet potatoes soon!
    ;) :-bd
As for the tv thing, i only have the tv on a few hrs a day and i try to entertain him as much as i can during, but he still does everything he can to look at it lol. Maybe i need to buy baby Einstein... but then thats just encouraging him to watch.

  • Hey @alyssa&cody... You realize you can get banned for unnecessary flagging right?? I didn't say one thing that wasn't true, neither did @Nicb13. Put on some big girl panties and act like an adult. (Although, I'm sure you're going to flag this too)

  • Ohh... I Thought I would add that I'm a nursing student about to graduate with a minor in nutrition studies. I'm going to go with everything I have been taught by licensed professors if you don't mind. They say the base age to start solids is 4 months, but that is greatly outdated and needs to be corrected. Technically, your baby could be showing all the signs of being interested in solids. The thing is though, that inside they are physically NOT ready for it yet. You are doing more harm then good. Why rush into it?? Patience is virtue in this case...

  • Babies at 4 months are MIMICKING you and your eating. They do not actually care about food and it is not wise to start them so early. Solids before one are just for fun. They don't NEED it.

Putting cereal in bottles poses a HUGE choking risk and its well known to not do it.

You CANNOT over feed a breastfed baby - ever. If your EBF baby doubled her birth weight early, that's PERFECTLY FINE. She's healthy.

Yes, I forgot to quote the person I meant to, but I'm mobile bumping and don't feel like re-writing this

Wow, my first "abuse" flag! I feel honored. Don't post on the internet if you can't handle what you might get in return.

And the whole rice cereal in the bottle thing just baffles me. That is so dangerous and straight up idiotic for a doctor to recommend for they reason that he did. Awful advice. I've never heard of a baby taking "too much breast milk" and that being considered bad.

I don't have one single ounce of pity for these uninformed mothers not doing their own research. Not one ounce.

All of these food discussions either for starting before 6 months or waiting til 6 months reminds me of the State Farm commercial about believing everything you read on the internet.

Yes, the AAP says to introduce solids around 6 months but also to ask your doctor about when and how.  So do that.  And after doing so, if you end up giving solid foods before 6 months you don't have to justify it to the Bump. The AAP also says not to give tylenol after vaccines, but how many people abide by that?
