Lip/Tongue Tie?

Is anyone here dealing with a lip and/or tongue tie?  Judah has been having such awful issues and I'd been thinking it was just colic or maybe digestion/allergy issues.... but after doing more searching on Dr. Google, I'm beginning to think that he may have a lip tie.  His breast feeding and pains match all the symptoms of what lip/tongue ties can cause and I experience some issues that are said to be related to it as well.  I looked and it does seem like the skin attachment (I forget what it's called...) of his upper lip does come very far down on his gums.  So I was just curious if anyone else, especially BFing moms, are dealing with this right now and what your plan of action is.  I'm considering calling the pediatrician to discuss this as a possibility for all our breast feeding struggles.

  • It comes down all the way to the bottom of his gums.

  • We have been having significant problems this time with nursing. The pedi checked for tongue tie but said that wasn't it. Instead we were referred to a chiropractor for cranialsacral therapy. She has a TMJ problem instead.

GL! Nursing woes are no fun.

  • I'm sorry you're having trouble. I don't have any advice for you from the mom perspective, but as a former tongue-tied baby myself, I will say that if it is a lip-tie and your doctor recommends fixing it, do it now! I didn't have problems latching so they left it alone, but when I was in high school my orthodontist had me get it snipped, which involved a trip to an oral surgeon, stitches under my tongue, and a whole bunch of pain and swelling. It was horrible. It's supposed to be no big deal for babies.

Little Moon had both upper & lower. We had them snipped after two days of latch struggles and saw instant improvement. Seriously, it made a huge difference!

I, too, was told that her ties werent the issue, but I'm glad I got a second opinion because they absolutely were.

  • So after reading some articles and looking at pictures online, I'm feeling more and more like DS may have an upper lip tie. I'm almost positive his tongue is fine, but his lip I think has a tie.

According to my LLL leader, if your little one has a lip tie then the chances are greater that they may have a tongue-tie as well. DD had a posterior tongue tie and I took her to a pediatric dentist to have her assessed and they snipped it. Posterior is not as easy to see and it does not cause any of the heart shaped that is associated with more sever tongue ties. Because of her tongue tie I ended up with something that's called lipstick nipple and she completely demolished my nipples. They were so bad it took a week of hydrogels 24/7 to get just get to the point of no scabs. Her lip tie doesn't overall affect anything though.

ETA: my pedi was no help and missed her tie. I contacted my LLL leader and they gave me referrals for someone who would help assess her. Pediatricians in my area do not like to deal with tongue ties and there are actually only 3 people(2 dentists, 1 ENT) who will clip.

  • Oh, the stupid part? Cost me $350 out of pocket to clip her tongue. It was a 2 second thing, literally, and it cost that much. Talk about sticker shock.

  • My LO has both and the lactation consultant referred us to a pediatric dentist to correct. Painful for me! But she gets enough to eat. FIL is a speech pathologist and he recommended correcting the tie due to speech issues down the road as well.
