What's your plan after baby is born?

Are you going back to work? Working less? Staying home?

Re: What's your plan after baby is born?

  • I'm lucky enough not to have to go back to work if I didn't want to, and I think that is what DH would actually prefer... but idk what I want to do yet.  I only work part time as it is, and I enjoy it most of the time.  I think it would be nice to have something.

  • Hopefully part time.  Fingers crossed!

  • I'll still be working full time. I'm a teacher so I will go back after 12 weeks until the end of the school year, about 2-3 weeks depending on when the baby comes. Then I'll be off again for the summer.
  • I'll be taking 12 weeks maternity leave and then going back to work full time. I have too many student loans and we can't survive on one income.

  • I would love to stay home, and I know we can more than afford it, but DH really worries about not having a second salary... so, we'll see what happens. I would love to take a year off and then go back but I guess only time will tell!

  • I went to school for way too long to give up my career! I really like it so I will be going back full time. I am lucky to get 5 months off for maternity leave so I'm sure I will be ready to get back.

  • I'm home with DD so when this one is born I'll be home with a toddler and a newborn.

I'm really trying to keep my mind from imagining that reality; especially when I can't drink wine.

  • I'm glad someone brought this up. DH really wants me to stay home. Part of me wants to stay home and the other part of me (the independent side) feels guilty letting someone else take care of me. I think about how fortunate I would be to not miss much of our LO growing up by staying at home. It is a tough decision and hopefully some of you will offer some advice from your own personal experiences.

  • I will be going back to work. I wish I could stay home but it is just not in me. I will be taking a 6 month leave (hopefully). My first leave was only 12 weeks and it was intense and stressful so I am hoping more time will allow for a better experience.
  • I already stay home with my little boy, so I will just continue doing that.

  • I love my career and enjoy being a working mom.  I hopefully will take a 12 week maternity leave, then go back two days a week for a month, then back to my  normal full time schedule.

  • I'll be going back to work full time after a 12 week maternity leave. We have some things we'd like to pay off before I consider a part-time schedule. I hope to be down to part-time within a year or so after the baby is born.
  • Also in Canada, so have a year off then back to full time. That is what we did with DD, this time, DH may take the last few months, so I would be off 9 and then he would be home for 3 months.

  • We had enough money saved up for me to stay home for at least a year after we had our first, but then we had to do IVF. So, now, I'm not sure what we will do. I'm a teacher, so I most likely won't finish out the school year. I guess we will have to wait and see how things look when it gets closer! I would love to stay home, though!!

  • I'm a photographer so I get to make my own schedule.  I have one wedding pretty close to my EDD which I may or may not be able to shoot (booked way before I was PG), after that I am not scheduling anything for a couple of months except for maybe portrait sessions if I'm feeling up to it.  We have enough saved that I can take it easy for awhile, which is nice.

  • This is majorly up in the air for us right now. We will be moving to a new state this fall & my plan was to try to get a teaching job for next fall. Now that there are two babies... I don't know. I never planned on having more than one in daycare at a time. I may find something part time... But I am scared about staying away from teaching for too long. Ack!

  • I'm so jealous of you Canadian ladies. Maternity leave in the States is despicable, and I'm one of the lucky ones. I get 12 weeks off unpaid, but luckily I get short term disability for 6 weeks, so I get 2/3 of my salary for half my time off.

  • I will probably take about 12 weeks and then start back part time, if not before then honestly. I hate not working and I work from home so it gives me greater flexibility. I am hoping DH can take some time off at the beginning too to help me get used to have a LO around and so he can understand what goes on all day while he gets to talk to adults :)

  • I'll be taking about 8 weeks off and then going back to school and work full time to finish my degree. I wish I could take more time off but one salary is not enough to pay the bills in our situation!

  • I unfortunately will go back to work in 4-6 weeks like I did before. I wish I could be a Sahm.. I hate leaving my baby! Especially when she cries and doesn't want me to go. But we can't survive on one income so I gotta do what I gotta do!
  • My hubby accepted a new job the same day we found out we were expecting!  Hoping to have a better idea of his income (it will vary based on what jobs his company contracts for) by the time I'm done with my 12 week maternity leave.  Right now I plan to go back full time (3 12 hour shifts) but with any luck, I would love to go down to 2 12s a week.  Especially since his job will require quite a bit of travel and my shifts are overnight, so child care is going to be tricky.
  • I won't be going back to work. In actually planning on leaving work around January/February. Were planning on moving across the country shortly after the baby arrives. I'll spend that time packing what I can, finding our new place & planning the move.

  • I'm self employed so hoping to keep my business going and just drag the LO with me to appointments if DH isn't home. I also teach pilates and yoga at our healthclub and they have childcare in the room next door, so I will probably be using that so I can keep teaching and classes are only an hour long so it won't be too bad.

  • I will be in school when the baby comes, so I might just not go back to class after spring break, watch class recordings, and then go in for finals. Then I'll be studying for the bar and will probably start working in August, so I'll be (mostly) a SAHM until five months.

  • I will be working full time. I feel like I should say "but I wish I could stay at home" but I don't. My career is a big part of who I am. I know without a doubt that it will shift in the list of priorities once our child is born and my hours will reduce (mind you I will still be 40+ hours). Luckily my husband supports me in this and encourages me to keep advancing in my career. I have no doubt its going to be really tough at times though!
  • Back to work ft after 6 weeks. I have a dtr in speech therapy and braces. No way to survive on 1 income. Bills to pay :((
