  • I had a small glass of wine here and there once I was out of the 1st tri with DD. I think there are a lot more unnatural, harmful things that people willingly ingest during pregnancy than an occasional glass of wine.

  • My girlfriend is pregnant n she drinks wine fr time to time! N she's fine so I guess there's nothing wrong with a glass if everything is fine
  • I refrain, but I'm more of a beer drinker...I do not frown on it as a choice, though.

  • I am not against it, but since this is my first and I'm soooooo excited, I just feel like isn't worth the risk. The same goes for coffee and tea, and I'm an espresso queen/tea freak! I think in the third trimester or for a special occasion I wouldn't turn down one glass, but I won't seek it out. I am pretty bummed that I can't heartily enjoy the amazing selection we just picked up at the Georgetown Winery, just outside of Austin. Jalapeño wine is sooo good!
  • I just want to say that I am so glad I found a website that the people arent so judgemental. I asked this same question on another sites boards and received nothing but a bunch of negative comments like"if your ok risking your babies life for a glass of alcohol then go ahead". I immediately deleted my account from there.

  • I am raising three foster kids with fetal alcohol effects, it is not a good thing they are behind emotionally, mentally and socially.
It is very hard for the kids as well as the parents, I am being very cautious and staying away from all alcohol and have been since starting to try to conceive.
  • I'm not much of a drinker so I just don't drink while pregnant but I don't have a problem with woman that do. It's a personal choice.

  • i detest any sort of wine or most alcohol in general, so it's a total non-issue for me.  if i see other pregnant women imbibing??  ehhh...  i'd definitely give the side eye.  i don't doubt a woman can take a few sips, especially in later pregnancy, and not risk major damage, but in my opinion, it's just not worth it.

smoking, however?  zero zero zero tolerance.  it's a repugnant habit to begin with, and to do it while pregnant is just double selfish.  ::fans the flames!::
  • I don't drink a ton so I don't find it hard to abstain from drinking for a while. Having said that, I don't see anything wrong with the occasional glass of wine in the 2nd or 3rd tri. We are one of the few countries to make such a big deal out of it and shame women into having the perfect pregnancy diet....in other countries they just do things in moderation, and it's not uncommon to see a pregnant woman have a few sips of wine.

  • I'm not a big drinker, but I wouldn't be against having a couple sips from DH's glass.  I had champagne (a glass or two) at my uncle's wedding when I was about 8 weeks with DS.  I didn't know I was pregnant at the time.  My MW says it's fine here and there, but not as a habit or drinking a lot of it.  She's recommended taking a bath and relaxing with a glass of wine in early labor and it's common to celebrate with a glass after birth (though we've never done that.)  I usually wouldn't have pour myself a glass while pregnant, just bc then I would probably drink it all, but a sip here and there is more luckily.
  • I don't really drink alcohol (just weddings and New Years) so I'm just not drinking at all however I don't see any problem with a glass of wine.
  • During my first pregnancy I didn't drink anything just because ya know it's the first and I wanted to be extra careful but I think I'm going to enjoy a glass or red wine every now and then during this one at least once I'm out of the first trimester... CHEERS!!!
  • That would be my main concern... It's so good once it hits the lips!!
  • I think it is more of an American thing that drinking is controversial. But all the same, to each her own. I will be spending time with my family in Switzerland during my 3rd tri and plan on  having a glass.

  • I feel it's personal preference. I, personally, only drink water, juice, and almond milk, nothing else at all. If a woman wants to have a glass of wine, who am I to judge? It's her pregnancy and her body! I just choose not to.
  • I just don't see the point in risking it.

  • I think the problem arises when people have the tendency to turn one glass into two, and then lose their judgement. Or, some might think "I didn't have any all week, so it's ok to have 3 glasses tonight." I think once you're well into 2nd or 3rd tri , a small glass for a special occasion is OK but I wouldn't kick back with my usual huge glass of merlot!

  • I'm sure at some point I'll have a glass, not a big thing for me. I will not give up my morning cup of joe. I've been drinking organic coffee for a time now and we are "allowed" 200mg a day. Also, I had a friend who drank a glass of wine almost nightly during her pregs. She has 2 healthy, intelligent little girls.
  • I had about three half glasses of wine during my 3rd tri with DD and will probably do that again. I come from an Italian family and no wine at Christmas will just be odd!
    That's what I keep thinking!

  • I won't drink it, but I don't like wine anyway. :)  I'm more of a cocktail drinker, so I'll just wait until next spring...lol.

  • Well, this didn't exactly turn out controversial, ha ha! I had occasional drinks with my first, including one or two during first tri, and I'll do the same this time. I won't have more than one drink in an evening. American diets include junk that I think is much sketchier than an occasional drink. Obviously, if you can't limit it to a single drink, you shouldn't go there.
