bath time help

Bath time makes me super anxious, like my chest gets tight and I breath faster.  DS has free roam of the tub after he capsized in the laundry basket.  I put a nonslip mat down and bought a spout cover.  Every time he stands up in the tub I make him sit back down.  Last night he discovered it was fun to stick his face in the water.  I'm going to have a panic attack if he keeps this up.  Any tips?

Re: bath time help

  • With A he keeps his head out of the water if I use his cup. I have a cup that I fill up and dump out on the top of his head and that wets his face some, so he doesn't feel the urge to faceplant anymore.

    Great idea!  I'll try that!

  • We do the same. I give him a cup to play with and I use another to get him all wet and rinsed off.

  • DS sticks his face in the water to blow bubbles. I'm not worried as long as he's not falling or breathing underwater. Maybe I'm a bad mom for letting him do that? You could always try the cup thing though.
  • We do the same. He's soaked me a few times though. Like completely threw the water in my face. If was pretty funny. :D

  • T loves putting his face in the water coming out of the faucet. I keep the faucet on a trickle and he is content enough to play with that so I can wash him without a fight.

This is pretty much what we do.

Also, it only took two tries of me ending the bath upon her standing for her to get the message.  Now she stands once, I sit her down, and she pretty much stays seated.  (Got this idea from @Cheerilee)
  • Is he just sticking is face in the water for a second? Is he trying to drink the water? S and V do this sometimes and I let them as they only do it for a second and they are not coughing or breathing quickly afterwards. I've found that when I really try to discourage a behavior such as this it just makes it that much more tempting. Would it be too anxiety inducing for you to just let him do it? As long as he's not sticking his face in the water for more than a few seconds it really shouldn't harm him. It sounds like he's just exploring. I know it can be scary but it may be worth picking your battles with this one. You're right there and you know him best though so take my advice with a grain of salt.

You have to come over here and hold my hand :)

You got it! I totally would. You're only like an hour away! You can be brave, though. He is going to do many things that are scarier than putting his face in the bath water. I totally get that anxiety, I've been there, but you can't let it control you. You still have to let him be a kid, even if it's really fucking scary sometimes.

  • I did much better today!  After the 5th time he stood up, I got him out of the tub.  Starting tomorrow, I'm taking him out after the 2nd time.  Feeling better :)

  • DS tries to drink the water like a dog. He also tries to drink out of her water bowl so I know that's what he is mimicking in the tub.

  • This may not work for everyone, but I just get in the tub with DS. I wash him and let him play with his toys, then I hand him over to DH, who is waiting with his towel, and then I wash myself. :) Saves water and I am right there to supervise him because he likes to stand up in the tub.

I started doing this with Bella now. I also say "Bum down" which she knows. She hasn't got it yet but I'm sure she will since she loves bath time.
