Inappropriate gifts for baby girls. Yes, I'm totally ungrateful.

I just received a onesie that says "Does this diaper make my butt look big?"

What the hell is wrong with people? Why do they manufacture this stuff in the first place--and how out of it does one need to be to buy it?
I am so irritated.  I wouldn't even donate this.

I'm glad the giver only has boys.  Dude.
My husband is gonna need to write the "thank you" note for this one.

  • That is a little rough around the edges.... eeeks. I suppose they thought they were being 'cute'.
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • Loading the player...
  • We bought one for our little girl that says "I just pooped myself #thisisawkward".
I suppose it just depends on your sense of humor.

Then again, I was gifted a 2 piece swimsuit, and I find that highly inappropriate. Sooo..to each their own?

  • I think you may be over reacting just a tad.  I don't find it funny but it's not that offensive either.  it would not be a good message to send to an older child but a newborn isn't going to know or care

  • They were probably just trying to be funny
  • We've bought (and made) lots of funny and even crass onesies.  I probably wouldn't give the crass ones to someone else.

At any rate, I think we can all wait until we pass the NB size to discuss or make a little girl aware of what size her ass should be.  It's yucky.

  • I would not be okay with any sort of clothing that eludes to my baby's body in a sexual way.

I have no problem with silly/funny onesies - even some crass ones - but a butt reference for a little girl? It's exactly what I want to avoid exposing her to as long as possible.

See, I just didn't even take it that way. Of course no one is judging a tiny baby on the "size" of their butts. Like I said, I guess it just depends on the person.

    Awwww, I love a baby in a 2 piece.

ETA: That sounds creepy. I just mean I like kids in adult clothes.
I find 2 pieces inappropriate on any child, personally. I'm just not a fan. /shrug

  • The onesie is not my style but I wouldn't say it was offensive or inappropriate. Im sure whoever bought it just thought it was funny.

  • Oh k....I really don't see the big deal here. Maybe the gift giver (who went out of their way to buy you something BTW) thought it was cute? Geez.

  • I think you're being a little sensitive. I do not see this as that big of a deal. And BTW- you don't actually have to dress your baby in it.

  • I personally don't see it as a huge deal, I'd get a little laugh out of it. Babies are too young to read it so I don't see it as harmful in any way. That being said I wouldn't gift a onesie like that because everyone has a different sense of humor and different tastes.

  • I don't think it's that bad, but that's just me. It would probably be one that is worn around the house but i've definitely seen much worse.

  • I think it's funny. Just dont have LO wear it. I'm sure the buyer just thought it was funny. We love onesies with goofy sayings. We have one that says "Potty like a Rockstar".
  • Like I said, I'm ungrateful.

We're in entertainment, and we're bicoastal.  We spend half our time in LA, where raising a little girl who's not an idiot about her body can be a full-time job.  I was pretty taken aback that someone would produce an infant onesie like this one.

To each her own.  And, no, of course I'm not putting her in it.  I want it out of the house.

  • I don't think it'd be something that I would put my child in, but to each their own. Can you exchange it? They did go out of their way to get your child a gift and probably just thought it was funny, so a simple thank you note from you would be the correct thing to do. If you don't want to donate it, try to put it on Ebay. Someone out there would find it funny and would probably buy it.

  • I'm with OP.  I think it's yucky.  True, a NB may not be able to comprehend the body issues that this is referencing, but I don't think it's cute to contribute to the message that women's body consciousness is inborn or the associated issues with women's worth being wrapped up in their appearance.

I mean, I get the joke.  It's just not cute or funny to some people.  To each his own.

Will you be teaching her to not have a sense of humor either?

Pretty sure no matter where you raise your daughter body image will likely be an issue.

That's true about all girls, worldwide.

  • I honestly find one I got that says "mommy's new shopping buddy" more offensive.

As for the babies in a 2 piece i think its impractical more than inappropriate. 2 pieces on an older child can be cute if its not a string bikini.

Yea, the 2 piece thing is more a religion thing for me than anything else.

Out of curiosity, why do you find "mommy's new shopping buddy" offensive?

  • I didn't even take it as a self image issue. I took it as that you're drawing attention to an infant's butt and there are some MAJOR sicko pervs that would take that as their invitation to do so.... I guess my mind is a bit creepier than some.

And OP, girls will struggle with body image no matter where they are. If you find that it is too disgusting to even have in your house, I would imagine LA has some trash cans that you could throw it away in? Or, are trash cans like poor body image and only exist in certain regions of the world??

  • Crass onsies are NMS, but I wouldn't stress over it. I'd just thank the giver, toss it in the good will pile and move on.

I don't really see a problem with two piece swimsuits for little girls, as long as they're not padded on top. That's yucky.
  • Gotta agree with OP, I wouldn't like it either. I don't think it's about the baby's interpretation of it at all, (I mean, duh, infant and all), but just perpetuating the bad body image stereotype that women and girls have to deal with. It's a double standard that we often ignore. They certainly don't make an equivalent for a little boy baby, do they? And if they did, would we think it was funny?

Meh, I've seen a onesie that says this, and it's totally gender neutral, so yea, there is a "boy" equivalent.

Actually for diaper reasons a 2 piece is much more practical than a 1 piece. But I do the best of both worlds with a rash guard top and bottoms.

  • @Elauren88 Its more NMS than offensive and I think its because its implies that there isnt anything better we could ocupy our time with, like there are ones that say daddy's hunting buddy or fishing buddy and it feels sexist that we get such a boring activity. I realize its over sensitive but i grew up with brothers and enjoyed more "male" activities and have fought people telling me what activities were appropriate for me to do and not do pretty much ever since.  I will however dress her in it becasue its a onsie and she is gonna spit up or shit on it anyway.

I think the OP needs to find a onesie with those famous lyrics on it for herself, and get over this whole thing.
