Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Doing something wrong??

Advice requested!! At night My 4 1/2 mo dd is sleeping 4-5 hrs, then waking every 2-3. I've been nursing her because I thought she was hungry nd also bc it's the only way to get her back to sleep. Is this wrong?? And now I'm worried that my milk supply isn't enough and that's why she's waking! I haven't been getting as much when I pump so now I'm exhausted from no sleep and stressing bc of possibly not providing enough. Ugh. I started pumping more frequently, though sometimes I don't get much of anything. We also gave her a bottle (of my milk, so I knew he much she was getting) before bed last night and she still woke. Suggestions? Thank you SO much.

  • Sounds like the 4 month wakeful! My little guy just turned 4 months. His first stretch is 5 hours, then he's waking every 1 to 2 hours after that. Sometimes he doesn't even eat, just wakes up. It's so exhausting. I know this too shall pass but I really do miss a full nights sleep!

  • It's perfectly normal for babies to wake in the MOTN. Adults do it! It's for their survival. I think we put a lot of pressure on babies to STTN. Imagine if a baby's body needed food but never woke to eat, that would be bad. It has nothing to do with your supply. Sometimes they wake up during a sleep cycles and just need to be soothed by mommy to help get them back to sleep. They regress and progress so much for the first year that you really just need to hang in there

This exactly! You may be starting the 4 month wakeful it sounds like too. You just have to roll with it and wait for it to pass.

  • Maybe just waking out of habit.  I never get much when I pump but DD is EBF and is growing just fine.  She can STTN but she usually doesn't. DS didn't STTN till he was 1 year old.  Night wakings don't = low supply.

  • what you are going through is so common so even though its frustrating it is totally normal.   we have been going though the same thing and just waiting for the day when he only wakes up once a night!  what is getting me through this is that i go to sleep when i first put him down at 8pm. so if he wakes up 4-5 hours later i'm least getting a good block of sleep myself.  best of luck to you!

  • Thanks, girls. Last night was every two hours. I fed her at 11, rocked her back to sleep at 115am, and then fed her again at 330am. I'm hoping ths phase passes soon bc mama needs some sleep!
  • I could have written this myself! Lo was only getting up once a night but now 2-3 times. I haven't been getting as engorged lately and have been so worried my supply is dropping, I just keep trying to remind myself its probably just finally regulated. I very rarely pump but I decided yesterday to start and try to give her a bottle of an extra ounce or two after her night feeding to see if she needs more. My Lo is only 3.5 months so Im not sure if its the 4 mo wakeful or not, anybody have it start a couple weeks early?
  • Not all babies can self soothe to sleep, this is completely normal. It actually hit me how frustrating it might be for babies-I myself woke up last night at 12, 2, and 430!  And I haven't been getting a good nights sleep at all recently, so it made complete sense that I was having issues staying asleep.  She of course STTN, but now I'm even more determined to never break that pattern...
