BFing Question-

I think I have an over supply issue, and forceful let down because he'll cough and pull off and my boob is spraying everywhere in the beginning (makes nursing in public interesting) I've begun block feeding about every 2-3 hours ish  to regulate my supply and I've stopped pumping once a day.

But Max also grunts and wiggles, pulls off and arches his back during feedings. But it happens at random times during the feeding. I unlatched him to see if the milk flow was too fast but it seemed slow, so I'm not sure what the issue is.

I've also been having achy shooting pains periodically usually after feeds, sometimes in my nipple but usually in my breast that go away quickly but when I touch my breasts they usually feel bruised. And sometimes after a feed my nipple is white.

Are these normal things to deal with while we're still getting the hang of bfing? It seems like I have a bunch of little problems that don't occur all the time and from everything I read doesn't point to one specific issue, unless they can all be attributed to over supply?

  • My LO will unlatch when he has a gas pain, could that be it?

That's what I was thinking, but with all the other weird stuff going on I was wondering if there was something bigger going on.
  • The first 30 seconds or so of nursing hurt the worst so I hate when he gets gas and unlatches. I haven't tried nursing in public yet...but unlatching would make it so much more difficult.
  • This was happening to me so I did some research and it sounds like it was nipple blanching from a shallow latch. It would happen to me when she kept pulling off. Here's an article from kellymom

I googled for ways to keep her latch deeper and started unlatching her when she starts to wiggle and get antsy.

  • Not sure about nipple blanching. But I had a huge oversupply issue. Had to block for 4+ hours to get my supply under control. It's much better now. And LO is enjoying all the hindmik now too!!

    Block feeding definitely works!!

  • I had a forceful letdown and oversupply issue and I block fed for 2-3 days before my bm was regulated. I still have a forceful letdown but Mila controls it well. She swallows continuously until the letdown slows. Also, I think once the supply is regulated, the letdown is less forceful because you don't have the pressure from full boobs. My breast feel bruised and it's in the area where I feel the letdown. I think the forceful muscle contraction makes it feel a like my boobs were working out.

  • Thank you for your responses!

I'm glad to see it's probably all related to oversupply and not to something else as well. I'll continue with the block feeding, it seems to be working!
  • with a forceful letdown, it helps to lay/lean back or feed in side by side laying position so that you are reducing the effect of gravitational flow.
I've read that shooting pains can also come from thrush infection of the breasts, but I'm not sure if that applies in your scenario.
Our hospital hosts a free weekly BF support group with an LC.  Is there something similar in your area where you might get some advice and support?

  • Do you know if there are any BF support groups in your area? They offer one at the hospital where I delivered and I just went to my first one yesterday. There was an LC there to help with questions and you can weigh baby before and after you nurse. It was really nice to talk with other moms and get advice and support. Plus it was free! I would look into this if there is one you can go to. Good luck! I am right there with you, it's hard!!
  • I am having similar problems, with the oversupply/forceful let down, they swallow a lot more air, so I have been trying to burp every time he pops off. Mine does just like you describe, I think he gets pissed at my boobs for choking him when all he wants to do is comfort suck. Hence why he gets a paci now. I also recommend a breastfeeding support group, I went to a La Leche League meeting last Saturday, and it was so nice to talk to other breastfeeding moms about their challenges and triumphs with breastfeeding.
