Emerson for a boy?

What are your thoughts on Emerson for a boy? I know it's very popular trending girl right now but I was curious what everyone thought of it.

The only reason I don't like it for a boy is because of its built-in nicknames of Em and Emmy, which are too feminine to me for a boy. But, if you don't care about those potential nns or plan to use any nns, I think it's a great name for a boy. Full disclosure though - Emerson was our top choice if DS had been a girl, so clearly I think it falls in the unisex category.

I think this one is more debatable as being unisex then most of the other names being discussed lately but I do see this as a boys name and its nice.

It's NMS, but I would much rather hear it on a boy. It doesn't make sense on a girl to me.

Is Emery a NN for Emerson? That might solve PPs concern about Emmy as a NN.

It really sounds like a girl name to me. But either way, I don't really care for it as a person's name, it feels much more corporate entity to me than person.

I don't know how Emerson or any other -son name got to be a girl name. I think a name that's "fitting" for one sex should be masculine/feminine in meaning as well as sound. I mean, lots of formerly boy names have gone girl, but they didn't have an obviously masculine word right there in the name for any native English speaker to see. EmerSON, what is so hard about that? /rant, sorry. I would love to see the boys reclaim this.

Isn't it strange how a name can sound completely masculine to one person and completely feminine to the next. I hear Avery and this girl which most seem to think boy, but Emerson, I think more masculine but to me it is fairly unisex

I realize that many of us who frequent this site prefer this name for a boy, but because it's gaining popularity via the general public for a girl- I would be hesitant to use it as a boy name. I prefer using "unisex" names for girls and keeping boy names non-unisex (I know people disagree that it's not a unisex name...but do you want to explain that to everyone?).

Wow, I"m relatively new to this board and had no idea before just now that people were using Emerson for a girl. Dang. I like the name for boys a lot, but it was also the name of my JR High growing up.

I probably heard it for a girl about 8-10 years ago and was shocked. It seems so masculine to me. I would use it on a boy. It's not as though it's a top 10 girls' name right now or anything.

it is a boy's name no matter what people say,,,the SON at the end clarifies that.

however because it is yet another name that has become a girls name I wouldn't use it

This. It doesn't fit well on girls, IMO, even though some folks use it.

And regarding "Em" names.. Emmett is another boy name with the same beginning. Doesn't seem like a big issue to me!

Dude, I'm a sucker for these poet names on girls, and I love Emerson for a girl. But you shouldn't let the fact that it's being used on girls stop you from using it on your son. It's originally a boys' name, for one thing. And for another, being used on girls doesn't make it somehow less worthy as a boy's name.

I really don't understand this argument. Especially when AliSON is very much a feminine name and would never be mistaken for a masculine name.

All of this. But I'm not a huge fan of the name at all. I think you could probably do better. What about Emmett or Everett?

On the contrary, Alison was a boy name that crossed over to girl and shows no sign of coming back.

Alison was a diminutive form of a French name.
Emerson is from a surname meaning "son of Emery".

Your argument could be justification that "butterfly" means "a flying piece of butter": just because a word shares similar compounds doesn't mean that the meaning matches.

Ha! Flying piece I butter, I'm going to have to remember that one. I'm in the camp of seeing Emerson as a LN, not a FN.
