Parenting after a Loss

Should I be concerned?

B will be 11 months old on Monday and still isn't traditional crawling or sitting himself up.  He army crawls everywhere and pulls up to standing from his belly.  I feel like he isn't sitting himself up because he never crawled on all fours.  I'm so nervous that at his one year check up next month his pediatrician is going to tell me he's behind.

My other concern is his weight.  At 6 months he was 16.5lbs and at 9 months he was only 18.3lbs.  Now at 11 months he's only just over 19lbs so he's only gained about a pound in 2 months.  He's stayed consistently in the 95th % for height but his weight percentile keeps dropping.  He eats a ton and has plenty of wet and poopy diapers but still doesn't gain nearly as quickly as he was.  The ped isn't really concerned because my husband and I are both thin and DS is very active but I still can't help but feel like I'm doing something wrong because he isn't gaining as much as he was.

My son is a peanut, he's 2 years old and only weighs 25ish pounds.  My ped isn't concerned because he's always been in the same growth curve (except when he was a NB, he started out 50th and moved under 5th, but then consistently in 15th ish ever since).  He is very bright and has always been on target or ahead with milestones.

I've read that some babies skip crawling altogether, so maybe its not time to hit the panic button on that yet, does he roll as a means of transportation?

I would honestly be a bit concerned about not sitting up though.  I really hope that you can have a frank convo with your ped to determine if your son needs PT, I've not been in that situation (I have my own different set of issues with my littles), but try not to be scared, if he does need help, he can get it and I've heard the sooner the better.

He rolled belly to back and back to belly really early.  He mostly army crawls everywhere or will pull up to standing and use the furniture to cruise a little bit.  He'll push up onto all fours and rock, has been since 7.5 months, but as soon as he wants to move forward he drops to his belly and army crawls.  It's very frustrating.

He is mobile and that is what the pedi will want to see. My kid was a late-ish traditional crawler, he preferred to roll everywhere. That yours is getting around, and moreso getting vertical...these are good signs.

Regarding weight, the rate of gain drops way off around your LOs age...and there is often a notable drop off once they really get mobile (burning more cals). He is a healthy weight for a one year old, you're doing good momma.

Regarding the sitting...he CAN sit, just not get himself into the position, right? I dont think I was ever asked about that at an appt. My ds didnt get himself into a sit until he was crawling on all fours. I think he was about your ds age when he figured it out.

  • Sounds like he will skip crawling if he is cruising.  Once he starts walking, no worries about if he crawls or not.  As for the weight, I wouldn't worry. He probably has a high metabolism.  My son was in the 95th for height and 50th for weight at a year old.  He was a scrawny newborn with chicken legs. My DD is the opposite.

Thank you hun. Its hard not to worry. If we put him in a sitting position he can sit that way for long periods, reach for stuff, play etc. He just hasn't figured out how to get into a sitting position on his own yet and I think a lot of it is because he has never crawled on all fours.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much. DD was still exclusively army crawling at that age. She didn't pull herself up by then, but she could sit herself up. Walking didn't happen until 15 months. Weight gain usually slows down a lot around 9 months, too. Even though he's probably eating a ton, he's also moving around a lot more. I would wait to worry until the pedi gives you a reason to, which I don't think will happen. He sounds normal :)

  • DD only army crawls and she'll pull up, but she isn't cruising and she's nearly one. Mostly I think pediatricians just want to see them getting around... we've been trying to give her incentives to pull herself up to standing more, and I think that's helping.

She was also only 17 lbs. when she was weighed about a month ago, but she seems happy, can devour whole meatballs, and has a chubby little belly.

So in other words, I wouldn't worry! It sounds like he's got his own thing going on.

  • I read your replies and it does sound like he's shimmying around intentionally, that's good, I misunderstood when you said not being able to sit up though, so I hope I didn't freak you because it does sound like he can sit up, maybe he just gets bored and keels over?

If you are concerned, I would definitely bring it up with your ped though still.  GL

Yeah he gets all around the house by army crawling and when we put him in a seated position he  can support himself for long periods, goes from sitting to belly just fine but hasn't figured out how to go from belly to sitting on his own. He can go from belly to pulling up to standing though? Its just hard not to worry!

Thanks ladies for sharing your stories. Its nice to know I'm not alone.
