Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sitting up?

Ok, so I posted about this at 6 months and here we are, at month 7, and still nothing. DS still isn't sitting up unsupported yet. He will sit in his play seat, on me, or in the shopping cart...of course, all of those are supported...but when I try to get him to sit up on his own, he refuses. I've put pillows and the boppy around him so I can sit in front of him and play and I've put him between my legs so I can support him and play. Either way, he scrunches down until he's on his back again and can roll around. He doesn't seem interested, but he can do it for at least a few seconds if he wants to. I've seen him do it. At the 6 month appointment, the pedi said practice pull ups and tummy time so he strengthens his core. We do both and still he refuses. He just flops right over. I know I'll probably get 'every baby grows at their own pace', but I'm becoming worried. He is starting to get on his knees and elbows and rock, so maybe he's working on crawling before sitting?! Any suggestions or advice?

Re: Sitting up?

  • My advice is to not worry at all. Your baby is doing great. Getting on all fours requires tons of core strength and that's what he is obviously interested in. Plus, you said he can hold the sit, even if for a short time. So you're fine! FWIW, ds has lower muscle tone and we were told that we should let doctors know if he couldn't hold a sit for 15-30seconds by 9 months.

  • I asked my SIL about this because she's a pedi.  She said that a lot of people think babies should be able to sit unsupported by six months, but that's not true.  They should be able to sit supported at 6 months and unsupported by nine months.  So at least according to my SIL there is no reason to worry ;)
  • DD is 8 mos and just sat up unsupported for the first time about 2 weeks ago, and she's still not able to support herself on all fours, so I wouldn't worry. I was worried, too, but she basically went from not being able to do it one day to being able to sit on her own for a good ten minutes playing. He'll get it eventually, all babies are different.
  • I'm right there with you! DD just turned 8 months today and she just doesn't want to do it. She would rather hold your fingers or her walker and stand. I was concerned too but I've been reassured by her pedi that it's fine :)

  • It sounds like he could do it if he wanted to, and I think that's probably what's important.  My DS was a late roller, but our pedi wasn't worried because she said she could tell he could if he wanted to - and it sounds like this might be the same.

My DD is 7 months and just started sitting up - and it happened fast.  She couldn't even sit in the shopping cart a week ago without falling over right away, and now a week later she can sit on the floor for 20 minutes by herself if she wants to.  A lot can change in just a few days!

Also, my DD is nowhere near getting on her hands and knees, so that's awesome that your DS is doing that!

  • You can try holding him in a seated position at the base of his hips so he has to use his core to find his balance.
  • Maybe it's not that he can't, but that he doesn't care to?  Maybe he likes rolling around/trying to crawl vs sitting, especially since you've seen him sit unassisted even for a few seconds...If the pediatrician isn't concerned then I wouldn't worry to much!
