Thanks to my mom, I'm now starting to wonder if DS should be saying more words by now. He says ball and DaDa, usually when asked, but slowly they are becoming things he says wen he sees a ball or DH. I think it may be my fault that he hasn't started saying more words yet because I'm not much of a talker to him though I still say a lot, but I don't explain things to him a lot. He babbles all the time and there has been no regression from that. It doesn't help that my mom said something to the effect of "I'm surprised he's not talking more yet, he's done all these other things early" things referring to crawling and walking (which I think he started at somewhat normal age). When I give advice to all you about milestones and such I usually say " well maybe he/she will just be book smart and the rolling/crawling/walking will come later, but you will have a super smart talker" or something like that and vice versa. Tell me I should be listening to my own advice and I have nothing to worry about that DS only says 2 words.
Re: Talking
DD2 is just in the past couple weeks mimicking words.
DD1 was about the same at this age and she was a good talker early on.
Trust me it all evens out as they get older anyway. Sounds to me like he's on the right track.
He babbles up a storm though. All kinds of made up words! I'm not worried about it at all. It's still super early for talking. At this age, I think they're main focus is mobility.
DS only has one word that he seems to use on purpose (doggie). Then he says mama and dada and DD's name (which has "ma" in it), but not in a discriminating way.
I think DD had two words at 11 months and three at 12 months. I don't think you need to worry.

Don't worry!!! My oldest was a late talker. I don't think he said "mama" until 18 months or so and didn't have any "sentances", two or more words strung together, until much, much later. I'm thinking 2.5 or so. He is an incredibly intellegent, strong willed, active 7 year old today.
All babies develop differently! As you know. I know it's easier said than done, but try not to sweat it.
My DS "talks" constantly but the only really words he says are MaMa, DaDa, and Doggy (which sounds more like daddy but he says it as he chases our dog around so I am pretty positive he means doggy)
I don't think you should feel guilty or luke you aren't doing enough to encourage words. I have full on adult conversations with my DS all the time to the point that people give me strange looks when we are out just the two of us and he still only says three real words but I think he understands alot more.
For example: When I ask if he wants to take the doggy out he crawls as fast as he can to the door and sits waiting for me to put the dog's leash on. Or when I ask him to come to mama he does one of two things a)he comes to me b) he giggles and sprints in the opposite direction with a mischevous look on his face.
I don't think we have anything to worry about. My niece didn't say real words until after 15 months!
