partial weaning/what about weekends/days off?

I faithfully (and annoyingly) pumped while working as I finished out last school year - I'm a teacher. I've been off for the summer and only pumped on a rare, as needed basis. My intention with going back to school is that I would partially wean and not pump at all anymore. I'll be in a new grade level with a lot of new things to do and the busy-ness of a new year. Well I can't just give up so I'm going to just pump at the end of each school day and supplement with formula. I'll continue to BF in the morning and before bed. I've made my peace with that.

Two weeks ago we were on vacation and I started with giving one bottle of formula at a normal feeding time. That was fine. Last week I was at a training and did some frozen BM/formula while DD was at daycare and I just didn't pump or anything. I fed her when I got home at 4ish. I was fine for most of the week in terms of comfort - only leaked once.

Now to my question - on weekends and days off from school - what do I do? Do I breastfeed as normal on the weekends or do I do formula the times she would be getting it at daycare? Like this is my last week off before going back to school and I'm not sure how to handle it. I'm not sure if it'll send mixed messages to my body or what.

What do you think? Thanks for any advice!

Re: partial weaning/what about weekends/days off?

  • I think it depends on your preference and also how your body adjusts. We have partially weaned, I only pump 1x at work for about 10 mins with a hand pump to relieve pressure. I bf on weekends like normal.

Sorry that probably wasn't much help

  • It depends on your body. If you want to nurse on weekends go ahead and see if lo is getting enough if not then sumplanent with formula.

I'd do it as you do during the week. Your supply either won't keep up for the weekend feedings or you'll stimulate too much. I pump at work and have learned its better for me to pump during the day on weekends too. E is too distracted to nurse anyway so I give him BM in bottles even on weekends.
