Baby mum mums

Are these things safe? I know they dissolve fairly quickly, but not immediately and they break into large chunks so easily! Dd definitely gagged a bunch and it sure freaked me out. We haven't done BLW largely because the gagging/choking scares me and I'd rather ease in. Once she developed her pincer grasp I know that will be easier as I can give small chunks of softer food. But I thought I'd give the mum mums a shot and they made me very nervous. Anyone else?

  • Have you read the BLW book?  It gave me a lot of peace of mind as far as worrying about choking, I'm feeling pretty comfortable with the whole thing now.

  • I read the website on it, but that's all. It just makes me nervous I guess.

  • My LO has a pack almost nightly.  After she has her puree she will play around with the mum mum while we eat.  Honestly try one - they dissolve VERY quickly.  I also agree with PP.  I am not doing baby lead weaning but I did do some research on it as I'm interested.  Our LO's gag reflex is in the middle of their mouth at this age so when the "choke" it is really just gagging because the reflex is so far forward.  As they age it moves further back toward their throat.  I have become more comfortable with it even though it does freak me out still.

Plus, there is actually a greater threat of choking from spoon-feeding babies, for example, chunkier purees.  In that case, you are using the spoon to place chunks toward the back of their throat where the baby has no control.  When the baby places chunks in their own mouth, they can keep the chunks in the front of their mouth, where they have much more control (especially breast-fed babies who have the tongue-thrust reflex). The gag reflex actual helps them to gage the best placement of food.  It made a lot of sense to me.

  • He does great with them but we are BLWers too. They dissolve instantly

Same here. Most end up mush in his hands or stuck to his chest but it keeps him occupied while I cook dinner and eat.
