  • They broke mine at the hospital.

  • Mine broke at work in a post partum patient's room. I was helping her breast feed at 5am. Huge gush.
I had to re-read because I thought you were saying it broke postpartum.  And I was like, "whaaaaat?  How is that even possible?!"
About to be outnumbered... baby #3 is on the way!
  • I was surprised to learn that a very small percentage of women have their water break before going into labor. I remember our Lamaze instructor saying its not like the movies where you are just strolling down the grocery store aisle and a bucket of water dumps into the floor. :)

I actually did have my water break first. It was 5am and i got up to pee. It was just a little at first and I thought I was peeing myself. A little while later it was an obvious gush.

Just a PSA, babies can be completely born in the sack! It's called "in caul". Most doctors choose to break the waters first because it's more convenient, but technically there's nothing medically wrong with it. In that case, your water would be broken post-delivery!

Right, but your water probably wouldn't break while you're standing up in in a postpartum room, after your baby has already been born.  That's the way my dumbass was reading it.

  • With dd it broke at home. I was having zero contractions, nothing. My water broke when I got in the shower (so it took me a little bit to realize it) and she was born an hour and 45 minutes later.
With ds it broke once I got to the hospital (I went when I was barely feeling contractions). He was born 15 minutes later.
I'm terrified of my water breaking in public because I don't think I'd be able to make it to the hospital.

    Fair enough. :)

  • Mine broke at home while I was in the bathroom. The contractions made me feel like I had to pee and I couldn't understand why I was peeing so much. Turns out it wasn't pee, but I didn't realize that until I got to the hospital and the nurse informed me that my water had already broken, I was 10cm dilated and ready to push. I had no leaking or anything on the way to the hospital.

Our old OB suggested inducing future labors for a friend because she went so fast, and they lived 25 minutes from the hospital. "That, or make sure your tub is clean."
Both my kiddos were born early though, so I probably wouldn't even make it to induction time. I'm not so worried about it happening at home as I am in public. I can just see myself at the grocery store delivering in the cereal aisle.

Just curious... how long would you say you were in labor at home before going into the hospital?

  • Mine isn't dramatic, but I was laying in bed around 7pm and felt a wet gush.  It didn't get on the bed, but I stupidly moved to couch.  Needless to say, that couch is no longer with us.
  • I read that most women don't have a "gushing" sensation when their water breaks due to the fact that the baby's head usually "plugs the hole" so to speak. If it does break in public I hear that it's usually just a light trickle and most people, with the exception of you, won't even notice.

  • My water broke on my second trip to the bathroom at 430 am. We had just put DS's crib together the night before. I wasn't sure what to do so I sat on the toilet and yelled for DH till he woke up.

  • In bed at home. I was five days overdue and hadn't had a single contraction yet.

I was half-asleep, felt a pain in my ute and thought "Oh shiz, that's GOT to be a contraction." Then my water broke. Small gush, trickle when I stood up, and then more gushing every time I had another contraction.

I'm pretty sure I skipped "early labor" at that point. It went from first contraction, to water breaking, to bad contractions every 3-4 minutes within about twenty minutes.
