Car Seat on Airplane

For those of you who have flown w/ your baby and used a car seat - what kind of seat did you use? I know it has to be FAA approved, I'm more concerned about it fitting. According to the FAA website, the seat should be no wider than 16". I don't see ANY seats that are smaller than 16.5". I spoke with a Delta representative, and she was clueless: "We don't get many calls about people wanting to purchase a ticket for their baby."

@LauraT25 I believe you have mentioned flying with a seat for your child, correct? Any help?

Thanks!

Re: Car Seat on Airplane

  • We flew with a combi Coccoro - fit like a dream - it is a short life rear facing seat (only to 33 pounds and shorter shell) - so not sure how big your kid is - but GREAT seat.. installed like a dream in rental car too.  I've heard flying with the dionos are great too (just get a rollar cart to haul them as they are 20 ilbs) - I've also heard people fly really well / easily with the cosco scenera (walmart) - not sure about the other cosco seats.

They will need to likely be installed forward facing - I'm ok with it for the plane - I know other parents have pushed to be able to install rear facing (it means the person in front of you can't put their seat back)

  • when I flew last January they had open seats and let me use the car seat to put E in. At the time I had my graco infant seat.
There is some FAA approval thing on it somewhere if you look at the stickers. The flight attendant found it for me, it was very simple.
    It shows the label here:

  • We have flown twice with LO, but we are still using his infant seat, which is a Chicco somethingorother.  The flight attendants on the 8 planes we flew on did not seem to give two shits what kind of carseat we were using, but maybe it's different with convertible car seats.

  • Thanks for all the feedback. She may still fit in her infant carrier come November when we are planning to fly. We have a Graco Snugride 30 and she is just now 17 lbs and 27" at 9 months.

We have two Safety First Alpha Omega convertibles as well as a cheapo Cosco - not the Scenera, but the next priced one up - we could take any of those if she does outgrow the infant seat. Would the convertible seats fit rear facing? Is it not an issue to have them forward face for the flight?

All of our seats have the FAA approved sticker.

Adorable! As a side note, are you still using the infant insert? It says to 20 pounds, but my C seems really big for it...
Nope - we took out the butt part a LONG time ago - like .. she was 2-3 months?  maybe olde r- she was holding her head solid for sure - and above the  bottom straps without it - we do still use the top head rest part.. she liked beinig more upright and we struggle with the car so much that anything that helps we go for :)
