Pregnant after 35

Question about 1st ob/gyn appt

Just wondering if it's normal to wait 8 weeks for the 1st ob appt after the age of 35.  I thought he would want to see me sooner due to my age...

Re: Question about 1st ob/gyn appt

  • Mine was at 8 weeks and I'm 41.  My sense is that, at that stage, there's not much they can do other than see how it's going-- they may or may not do an ultrasound, but most of the visit is medical history and blood work..  If you have a history of miscarriage it may be different (I had one last year, so this time he did an ultrasound at the first appt), but otherwise, it seems like this is pretty standard, even if you're advanced maternal age.

    good luck at your appointment!

  • My OB's scheduling nurse initially wanted to wait until eight or ten weeks pregnant but I reminded them of my age (37) and they moved me up to six weeks pregnant.

  • 8-10 weeks is typical unless you have a history of early losses. Mine brought me in at 6 weeks for a dating u/s due to my loss history.

This. I was also seen early and monitored closely because of my history, otherwise they would have waited until 8 weeks.
Me:41, DH:41 Positive for MTHFR mutations- one copy C677T, one copy A1298C. One daughter born on Thanksgiving in 2013. Six losses.
  • I'm 40 and my birth center midwife is waiting to see me until 10 weeks, even though I had a miscarriage. I wish I could go in earlier! But I was informed that ultrasound dating is more accurate at 10 weeks, and we'll have a more productive first visit.

  • Based on other women on my BMB - 8 weeks is actually early!

Mine was at 8 1/2 weeks, however I was seeing an RE before hand so was having appointments and u/s up until then.

Me: 37 DH: 37 TTC since Jan 2012. RE consult and initial testing done in Aug 2012: SA fine, AMH 1.1 & HSG clear - on way to IUI but got BFP on 9/10/2012. m/c 10/3/2012 at 6w5d. BFP next cycle which was a c/p. IUI #1: Clomid 100mg 12/6= BFN. IUI#2 (unmedicated) Jan 2013 = BFN. Hysteroscopy 1/25/13. IUI#3 Clomid 100mg 2/23 = BFN IUI# 4: BFN. IVF #1 April 2013, BFP!  EDD 1/12/14 with Boy!
  • Hello.

I just had my "confirmation" visit with the OB center and am scheduled for an ultrasound this coming Thursday to determine my exact timing (7 weeks at the moment) and to make sure all is well because of my age. Then my 1st official OB visit is on the 31st, which would make me 9 to 9 1/2 weeks.

I guess the doctors wait longer these days. I'm pretty sure with my other two I was seen for my 1st OB within a week of taking a home pregnancy test. But that was so long ago, I may be mistaken!

As long as you feel okay and do not have any bleeding you should be fine waiting until your 8th week.

Mine was 8-10 weeks even being over 35. They did schedule additional 1st tri testing because of my age but there isn't much to do before then. Honestly I'm glad because you read stories about women who are seen at 5-6 weeks and they can't see a heartbeat yet and they get scared.
  • Thanks so much to all the ladies that responded!  Much appreciated!  Since this is my first ever pregnancy, you all helped put my mind at ease a bit!

Congrats to each of you and best wishes!!

  • I'm 5w+1 too!!! :D  I'm 38 and pregnant for the first time.

My first prenatal isn't until 7/30 (I'll be 7w+2 then), but I scheduled an appointment for tomorrow with a nurse practitioner because I've been having mild cramping and I'm paranoid that it could be ectopic!  If they do actually do an ultrasound (not sure if they will), it might be too early to even see anything. I'll let you know!

    Congratulations on the pregnancy!

This happened to me. I am 37 at about 6 weeks with my first baby. Ob had me in last week for an u/s and there was not much to see. She wants me back in this week for another u/s, but I'm not sure why. I have just been diagnosed with a dvt and have been on shots of lovenox twice a day, so maybe it is because of that? If she saw something last week that she was concerned about she would have told me, yes?
  • I'm 37, pregnant with my first and the OB office doesn't want to see me until 10 weeks :-(  My first appointment isn't until 8/6/13 (10w3d), but because I was seeing an RE, I had an u/s at 6w3d (thought we were 6w6d/7w but...) to check for viability and dating.

    I'm so not patiently waiting...

  • I'm 35, have had a miscarriage and mine was at 10 weeks. No ultrasound. They didn't seem concerned about my age. They just offered a few more tests.
  • My RE ordered an u/s for me at 6wks for dating and viability, but the OB doesn't want to see me until 10 wks (scheduled for 8/6, thank goodness!)

  • I've read that 8 weeks is normal, but I'm going in on Wednesday for my first visit.  I'm 5 weeks.  She said she just wanted to do a consultation and discuss benefits and any risks (I'm 35 and have PCOS).  I was surprised she wanted to see me so early.  I think my appointment is more to discuss the plan and my insurance coverage.

  • Im 37 and this is my first. I am 6wks and will see my general Dr. in 2 days. I suppose we will discuss setting up with a OB at this time. What else should I expect?
  • I'm 36 with a history of miscarriage and still didn't have my first OB appt until 9 weeks.

  • My friend is having her second child at 38 years old. After getting a positive home pregnancy test, she waited to 10 weeks for an OB appt.
