Moving to OH- recommendations?

Hi all,

My family is in the midst of relocating to the Columbus, OH area.  We are looking for houses in the Westerville and Granville area and would love your recommendations on housing, pediatricians... really anything.  I have been to Columbus when I was much younger, but haven't been for about 20 + years.  We live in Iowa right now, and have almost all family 2 hours away, so I am really scared, but excited for this change.  We have 2 kids- my son is 3.5 and my daughter is 21 months old.  Both are getting genetics testing on Thursday (my son for BWS and my daughter for TSC or NF-1).  My son has been relatively healthy (although he had croup again last night after a 6 month hiatus- not sure when he will grow out of this, or if we need to talk again to his ENT) and he is hitting his milestones alright.  My daughter is a recovering feeding refuser and has shown skin signs of possible TSC or NF-1 (cafe-au-lait marks and hyperpigmentations) and since April, has been having 'possible' seizures (had 2 EEGs and an MRI that came back with no answers).  So, looking for some doctors (Ped, Neuro, Ophthalmologist, ENT and children's hospital (wow- we see a lot of specialists- don't realize till I write it down!)) and any recommendations for drop in daycares, good places to go with the kids (I am able to quit my job and become a SAHM- so excited :)), or anything else you can give me.  We don't have a house yet, so if there are better places close to Columbus to look at (for schools, crime, etc) please let me know.  We are Midwesterner's, but can acclimate pretty easily (is OH still considered Midwest?).  :)
Okay, enough here to start with.  I would love any suggestions you all may have!  Thanks!

Re: Moving to OH- recommendations?

  • Contact Help Me Grow.  It's the early intervention system in Ohio till age 3.

We lived in the Cleveland Area for 5 years so I don't have much help in the columbus area.
To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • Ohio is still considered the Midwest although DH and I joke frequently that it is hardly west and no where near mid ;) We are from Dayton, but go to the Columbus Zoo and Easton Mall quite a bit...If I had to relocate Columbus suburbs would be my top choice, so I'm a little jealous. As previous poster mentioned HMG is Ohios birth to three, obviously we'd be serviced by different counties but I've had nothing but good experiences with them. Cincinnati children's is also pretty highly regarded , our EI team and DDs original (before the Sh.t hit the fan) pedi suggested we forego Dayton Children's and I'm glad we did. What little time I spent attempting to make an appointment with them showed me a lot of disorganization and rudeness. I wish you luck in your big move, feel free to PM with any questions :)

  • We are in Cincinnati, so I can't help with Columbus area doctors.  I know that Nationwide is generally recognized as a good children's hospital, though.

Just curious as to the hyperpigmentation.  Has she been by a dermatologist yet?  I'm just curious because my DD has epidermal nevus (swirling hyper pigmentation and wartiness) - and I know it can be associated with seizures and other neurological problems.

We see Anne Lucky in Cincinnati for dermatology and are very happy with her.  She has a background in both genetics and dermatology, so she is a good person to see for unique dermatological issues.  I know people come from all over the country to see her.  She does have a long waiting list (we waited 8 months), so if you think you might want to see her, I'd get on the list now.  =)

Also, I know that Cincinnati Children's has a well known TSC clinic, if that's helpful.  And we saw Dr. Gilbert in Neurology there when my DD was younger.  We were happy with him and he has a good reputation.

Good luck with the move and with your kids.

  • Thanks everyone!!! Rose- we have done 2 woodlamp tests- one at the ped and one at the neuro that confirmed the possibility. She has to have 3 ash leaf marks for tsc, and she has 2, but they have both shown up in the last 2 months. Plus all of the freckling and cafe au lait marks showed up then too. So, I am super worried because of how fast all of these skin marks have shown up, but since there is so much variation to tsc and nf-1, it is hard to determine prognosis at this stage. Just needing to be watching for seizures and possible tuner growth- so MRIs and ultrasounds. If you would like to talk more, message me! I am new to the journey, but have tried to research a buttload. :)

  • Yeah, definitely doesn't sound like epidermal nevus.  I hope you get some definitive answers soon and find some good docs.  Best of luck!

Welcome to Columbus!  I lurk here from time to time, my younger son has ASD.  I can't offer a whole lot of specifics regarding the specialists you are looking for, but Nationwide Children's Hospital is the local pediatric hospital.  It is on the east side of Columbus, but also has satellite Close to Home Centers throughout the area.

As far as locations and schools, there are many good areas. I would say that Dublin and Olentangy districts are good, housing can be expensive in those districts. They are generally the best regarded as far as special needs.  Other good districts are Hilliard, Westerville, and Worthington.  Don't know too much about Granville schools, but it is a bit of a hike from town.

Step by Step Pediatrics in Westerville is a great practice for your primary pediatrician and they can refer as needed.

I have been lucky to work part time and use family for childcare so no help on daycares either.   As far as things to do around town with kids, definitely the Columbus Zoo and COSI is fun also.  We have annual memberships to both, and are well worth it.  Let me know if I can be of anymore help, and GO BUCKS!

  • Thank you so much June27!  We are actually expanding our search now, as we have a neighbor who is relocating as well, and so our housing comps came way down (2 houses in the cul-de-sac selling at the exact same time, their's for way less than it is worth= not good for us :(  ).  So... we are looking in Westerville and New Albany now.  I appreciate the Ped recommendation also!  I look forward to posting more, and getting info!!!

    Thanks!

  • I should add- both Westerville and New Albany look super nice as well- we will be looking for the cheap (are there such a thing?  haha) houses now!  I should have taken advantage of our prices here in IA more so than we have- didn't realize how expensive some other places are!

  • Welcome to Columbus!  My family and I live in Westerville, and we LOVE it!  There are so many parks, walking paths, etc...My LO's are both under 2, so I don't have any recommendations on school districts, but I have heard great things about Olentangy and Westerville.  My LO's go to Powell Pediatric Care in Powell, for primary care and Children's Ophthalmology(Dr. Jordan) for my DD's vision.  We really like Powell Pediatric, they are very thorough and have weekend and morning walk-in hours.  As far as things to do, we go to the zoo a lot and Polaris and Tuttle malls have great indoor play areas.  I am a SAHM, so I don't have any recommendations on daycare, sorry!
