Anybody Eating Foods off the No-No List?

It's not as much that I am blatantly forgoing the suggestions about food, but half the time, I'm elbow deep in a cold cut sandwich or munching the crap outta some eggs benedict and THEN I remember, wait...I don't think I'm supposed to be eating this. My OB during my last pregnancy was fine with lunch meat and most other foods that typically appear on the do not eat list so I think I am just naturally more open with my food choices during pregnancy. Butstill, I am trying to limit processed foods on the whole, but find myself failing miserably most of the time.

I'm wondering if anybody else has been enjoying foods that are typically "taboo" during modern-age pregnancy.

  • I've had a few Jimmy Johns sandwiches. I also had eggs over the weekend that I thought were done but were still a little runny. I think I'll survive though.

And I had eggs last night.  Although I thought I had cooked it long enough to make sure the yolk was hard, it was mildly runny in the middle, but it was SO hot, i'm sure everything was killed!

While I'm doing my best to be conscientious, I gave into my craving for over easy eggs. We use our eggs promptly, and from what I've read, it's the whites that are more likely to harbor salmonella.

  • yup...I'm eating lunch meats (not a ton) but at least once a week. I've had sushi once. Coffee doesn't sound good to me anymore, but I am having iced tea every now and then, but making sure to stay under the 200mg of caffeine a day.

Can't think of anything else...but I'm sure there is something. My thought is...these rules haven't always been around and we all survived. Right now, I'll eat anything I can stomach and sounds good!
  • I allow myself one caffeinated beverage (one coffee or one can of regular soda) a day. Sometimes I don't use them, but some days I need the kick to help get me through the day. My fatigue is kicking my butt right now :(

I was out of town for a conference two weeks ago and the lunch they provided for us every day was some sort of deli meat sandwich so I really didn't have much of a choice eating those.

I've been craving soft cheeses lately. I haven't had any yet, and I need to ask my OB about them, but cheese stuffed olives sound so delicious to me right now ;)

  • I have also eaten lunch meat. I totally forgot about eggs! Oops. I also drink coffee everyday, I wouldn't function well without it. But we eat very healthy otherwise, fresh fruits and veggies and very little processed food, preservative free if possible. So I don't feel too bad about slip ups every once in a while.
Due 3.27.14 (lame because I cannot figure out how to save a fun ticker.....)
  • I had sushi from a place I know and trust two weeks ago, and I've made eggs at home that are a little runny (I wouldn't order eggs anywhere that aren't fully cooked, but I trust my own). I've also had the occasional cold cuts. I drink a latte every morning but I don't usually drink sodas or eat a lot of chocolate so I'm well under the limit.

My philosophy is to use my best judgement and it's ok if it's "just a little bit" (I'm mobile or I would insert Dr Sonya image from How I Met Your Mother)

I drink a cup of coffee every single morning and I accidentally had two glasses of iced tea yesterday afternoon. So far I've eaten a spicy tuna roll, eggs sunny side up, medium cooked steak (I love medium rare) and have generally been forgetting the rules. I've been forcing myself away from Whole Foods, however because if I go I know I will desperately want to put feta cheese on my salad! Can we eat ricotta cheese? My favorite white pizza is covered in ricotta and I had that too. Oops.
You can eat feta cheese that is made from pasteurized milk. Just read the label.

  • Guilty. I've had over easy eggs, lunch meat, sometimes a cup of coffee, and sushi rolls (though no raw fish).

  • I'm eating all cheeses but I do make sure they're pasteurized. Does that count?

  • I have had sushi and eggs.
  • I've had deli meat, med-rare steak, and drink caffeine daily.  I am not a huge fish fan, but would throw back some sushi (I really only like seared ahi tuna or shrimp, which is cooked) if the opportunity presented itself.

  • I didnt even know there was a no-no food list! I have small children, so I already stay away from fish thAt is high in mercury. We rarely eat lunch meat bc of a family history of colorectal cancer...I never cook my eggs over easy, my steak is always medium well (at least), if I eat soft cheese it's always from pasteurized milk. An bc of issues with bp/tachycardia, I am already caffeine exempt. What else do I need to know?
  • I am drinking a cup of regular coffee with vanilla creamer and I'm loving every single drop! I ate sushi and a medium rare steak too. And I didn't take my prenatal one night bc I was too sick to even entertain the thought. I'm such a rebel, I know! [-X

  • Aside from limiting higher mercury fish and having only 1 caffeinated beverage a day, I haven't changed anything. Eggs are irradiated, cheese is pasteurized , etc. I'm just trying to eat a healthy well balanced diet.
  • Guilty! Two days after my BFP I wasn't even thinking and made eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. All kinds of no-no's there. I drink a cup of coffee every morning as well. And while tailgating for Dave Matthews this weekend I drank two non-alcoholic beers (shocking!!!). That may sound silly to mention, but I have seen the "holier-than-thou" attitude on other boards regarding the tiny amount of alcohol in alcohol free beer... 8-|

Glad to know that we have an awesome group of March 2014 Mamas with some good heads on our shoulders :) I have been impressed by the lack of "I was outside for ten minutes in 90 degree heat. Will my baby be okay?" posts.

    I concur.

You can find some pretty scary sites online listing pages and pages or stuff you shouldn't eat, or even wear, or horrible things will happen to your baby. One even said I shouldn't wear perfume, or be around someone spraying it!

I'm all for being safe during my pregnancy but I think some people take it to the extreme. Like others said, pregnancy "no nos" were WAAAY more relaxed when our parents and grandparents were pregnant, and we all turned out fine ;)

I got the same thing. "Did you know that decaf coffee actually still has caffeine it it?". Who cares - I still have a small coffee most every morning. I found when I cut it out I had the worst headache ever.  ~O)
FWIW, non-alcoholic beer contains a tiny amount of alcohol too.

  • This group does rock! :)

    @LaurenAsh23 - I am 100% on board!
  • it's hard when you already have a kid! my daughter loves chicken apple sausage and hot dogs and i usually have a few bites of hers and they're not very hot when i give them to her.  then i'm realizing, if i choose to avoid those foods, i'll have to wash my hands every time i touch them too.  i'm not sure yet.  i'm kind of scared of listeria but most of my friends who have had multiple kids never worry about it...
  • The only restrictions that ever cross my mind are caffeine and alcohol. Otherwise, I pretty much eat what I want.

Ha! So true. I take hour long walks outside multiple times a week. In July. In Texas. Given, I should probably get off the high horse until after our first appointment!
And exercise is encouraged right? Well, it's summer and hot and I have no desire to join a gym, so walking or running outside is my best bet! Think of all those babies born before Air Conditioning was invented... I'm sure we'll be fine :)

I've had a few lines of cocaine and a couple tequila shots... But other than that I've been pretty good!

    I kid. ;)

But really, I had NO idea eggs are on the do-not-eat list... I guess when you think about it, runny yolk = rawish yolk.... Never really thought about that lol. Is that the concern? Nonetheless, I had some a couple days ago. Ah well.

The main thing I pay attention to is caffeine, but I never had much to begin with so that's no big deal. I've been craving sushi (spicy tuna rolls...... Mmmmmm). I'm assuming if I go to a trustworthy place it's nbd?

Eggs are great for pregnancy but they're supposed to be fully cooked. I love runny yolks for dipping toast! The problem is that we are at greater risk for developing salmonella. I think I might break this rule too.

I don't eat eggs, so the only thing I am avoiding right now is sushi. Possibly because I would have it 4-5 times a week if I could... so I'm cutting way the heck back to occasional. I eat cold cuts.. cold. Love my moldy cheese. Will have occasional wine after the first tri. My iced coffee is one of the few things that tames the nausea. What's the opposite of paranoid? That's me :)  But then again, this is my third. My 13 year old is 5'10" and healthy, so I don't think I've done so badly so far.
