Traveling w Inlaws-FTM advice please

Good morning!
(XP in 0-3m)

Tomorrow I'm about to make a 5 hour trip with my 9 week EBF son and my in laws. Im assuming the trip will probably be more along the lines of 7 hours with stopping to stretch/breastfeed. I'm also assuming LO will get fussy (fingers crossed but I'm trying to be realistic!)

Just looking for any tips, tricks or advice. I'm pretty nervous but really hopeful I can make this trip. My mom it at our destination and I cannot wait for her and my brother to see LO!

Any and all advice for travel is greatly welcomed and appreciated!!

TIA and kindest regards!

  • Just did a five day car trip.u recommend having a bottle of pumped milk in the car in case the nearest turnoff is far away. Also make sure you try to feed and change LO every chance you get. I put her in the back seat and say beside get and was able to entertain her with smiles and colourful toys. Honestly she mostly slept.

  • Oh and if LO has a fussy periodic the day....for instance 4pm to 6pm...DO NOT attempt to drive at that time. We started driving early morning so she was at her best.

  • I will be on a road trip with my parents and my 11 week old this weekend. We have a 9 hour drive! My parents said we can stop however many times I want but I'm still so nervous about how it's going to go. I am curious what advice moms will give! Good luck! Hope it goes well for you.

We just got back late last night from our first weekend of traveling with LO. What helped us was having plenty of bottles (LO is EFF) but if you have some bottles maybe someone else can feed LO while you stretch, take a break, pee, etc. Having my diaper bag super organized also helped so I didn't have to fish for things too much. And the obvious, make sure you have plenty of diapers and wipes. LO slept on and off and only fussed a little bit. Good luck, and safe travels!
  • Oooh ya I'll second the organized diaper bag...and at least once I resorted to showing her colours on my iPhone. GL

  • Good question! We are going to attempt our first road trip this weekend.
Baby girl born 5/20/13. Figuring it out as we go. :)
  • We took a 5 hour trip a couple if weeks ago. I just made stops to nurse, but definitely take some pumped milk just in case. My biggest fear was hitting a jamup due to a wreck or rush hour, & having no way to feed him while stuck on the road. On our way back, we made our stops at a rest area. They just felt much more relaxed, plus there are usually little picnic areas that would be nice to nurse at & get some fresh air (I didn't have the guts to do it anywhere besides the car). Since we were in a rush on our way up, I stopped at a fast food place for breakfast. I sent my sister in to get our food, while I nursed, and then I just ate on the way. Helped us save a little bit of time. Honestly it wAsnt that bad. He slept for a good chunk, & the one time he did get cranky was because he tried to be a big guy & stay awake too long. We just put my phone back there with the white noise app on & he was instantly calm again.

Also, I have one of those diaper change clutches, but definitely keep something like that. Or at least all of those supplies in something small & quick to grab. It will make your changes so much easier when you're not wrestling with a huge diaper bag.

Good luck! I think you'd need more luck handling the inlaws than a baby, but that's just me! lol
  • Keep the canopy on the car seat down...because the car seat can get super hot and the canopy will block the AC.   We learned this the hard way.

I also sat in the back with the baby to keep an eye on him.  You can bottlefeed him while driving but you will have to pull over to burp, change him, and give him a little breather.  The outdoor rest stops with picnic tables are nice.   And just try to park in the shade away from other cars if possible.

    Have fun!!

  • I've been on a few road trips with W this summer (the longest was 800 miles each way in family emergency mode) and I found that pumping in the car made the trip go much smoother. That allowed us to feed him bottles along the way instead of him nursing at each stopping point (he is a really slow eater and when we stopped to nurse it took over an hour each time).

We never went longer than 3 hours without stopping to get him out of the carseat, change him, and stretch a little. His sun hat was a blessing on those stops. He really enjoyed the stretch time and the fresh air.

We also had music that W loves listening to. When that didn't work, my husband and I sang for a while. We had entire conversations in song to help keep Little Man calm.

The last thing that really helped was making sure to keep his night time routine when we we got to where we were stopped for the night.

This got really long, but I hope it helps. Good luck and safe travels!
