8 weeks no US yet? I'm confused

This is my first pregnancy. Today I had my first visit to my obgyn they just did an exam and asked a bunch of questions and said see u at 12 weeks. I just don't understand why some girls get an US before 12 weeks and I have to wait! :( Waiting very impatiently! Or is this common for your first pregnancy?

Re: 8 weeks no US yet? I'm confused

  • Since I was under the care of my RE when I got PG, I will get bw, betas and u/s done before I am released to my OB.

  • It's my first pregnancy too so I can't claim to know any more than you do about it, but I guess different docs have different policies. My doctor was on vacation when I found out so I had my pregnancy confirmed by another doctor; she wasn't going to have me in for an ultrasound until 10 weeks. I was glad I had my trusty OBGYN to go back to as he does an ultrasound at every exam, even when I'm not pregnant. I know it's got to be so frustrating to be told you have to wait so long. I wouldn't be able to stand it.

  • I think it varies based on the OB. I have my first appt next week with the nurse. Then I will be able to schedule my u/s, which will be at 12 weeks. I know it's hard to wait when everyone keeps posting their pics.

  • Aww I wanna go where u go! Lol
  • The ObGyn I had for my daughter didn't do an ultrasound until the beginning of the 2nd trimester. They only did one on me at 7 weeks because I had a previous miscarriage. I switched ObGyn's this time and was pleasantly surprised that he does one on everyone at 7 weeks. Completely depends on the doctor.

  • 1st was with family practitioner and only one at 20 weeks. I didn't have my first appt. Until 12 weeks!! This time I have an OB and it s standard that all appts are 7 to 9 weeks with an US. I'm very happy! Don't know how I waited that long the first time!

  • It all depends on your doctor.  Many of us that are getting the betas done and the early u/s are seeing an RE, and/or we're high risk, have a history of loss, etc.  Some doctors only do one u/s at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan.  Sorry you have to wait, but it is pretty standard amongst "regular" OBs.

Why?  Sounds like a nice drain on insurance companies.

I am not sure why, and agreed that it was kiiind of a waste, until he found cysts and fibroids that were a cause for concern. Apparently the problems I was having were a result of birth control pills other doctors had prescribed, and switching BCs can cause fibroids and enlarged cysts even in healthy women. Also, those u/s weren't billed to my insurance, which is nice because my insurance sucks and would not have covered them.

Glad it caught those...when I first read it I just pictured him doing one for every single patient every time whether they needed one or not.  I was like huh?

  • Can't you request an ultra sound? Like you can go anywhere for one, you just need a script. But usually they only do it early because of high risk.
  • I had one at 8 weeks last time because I had bleeding, otherwise it would have been the NT scan at 12 weeks. I am hoping to not need one until then this time around! The visual confirmation was nice, but I was so worried about the bleeding.
Due 3.27.14 (lame because I cannot figure out how to save a fun ticker.....)
  • I had my 1st apt today, just a pregnancy test and blood test.  2nd apt is next week is just an exam.  U/S is not scheduled till the end of August.  Almost 12 weeks.

  • This is my fourth pregnancy, but only the second where I got an US during the first trimester... My midwife wanted me to go in to get properly dated, and to make sure everything was looking good because of low hcg numbers a few weeks ago. I won't get another until around twenty, when I go in for a diagnostic.
  • At the clinic I go to, you only have the gender us and an ultrasound at 28 weeks unless there are issues or unless you don't know how far along you are, then you get a dating us.

  • A lot of places prefer waiting until 12 weeks for multiple reasons. They do a 12 weeks nuchal scan that checks for disorders. Plus, the longer you wait the more it looks like an actual baby and not a blob! I had my first us at 11 weeks and it looks very much like a real baby. Moving about and wiggling little arms and legs. It was amazing. Be patient!
  • I would love an u/s right now too, but that's just not how my OB does it. They only do the 20 week anatomy scan, unless there is need. Last pregnancy I had a dating u/s because my LMP was very obviously giving us a wrong due date, a scan in the E/R (which was on a sucky cheap machine so we couldn't tell much), the a/s (same day as the ER, coincidentally, but like 12 hours later), and then another one toward the end when I seemed to be measuring too big in the dr's office.

Where I live you have an ultrasound at 20w and that is it. Unless there is an issue with the pregnancy.

  • With my first pregnancy, we opted not to do the NT scan, so my first u/s wasn't until 18 weeks. With my second, I was less sure about my dates so they did a dating u/s at 9 weeks but then the next wasn't until 18 again.  With this pregnancy, I might not even have the 18 week scan, my midwife doesn't do them automatically but we can request one if we want.
