Sorry to beat a dead horse (CIO question)...am I confusing him?

...but I know I'm on the earlier side of trying CIO and my new birth month isn't quite there yet, so I'm asking you seasoned mamas :)
We're going to be on night 3 of sleep training tonight and so far it's going well. I'm checking on him in intervals and night 1 was 60 minutes, night 2 was just under 30 and hopefully tonight will be even less.

K uses a paci so when I go in to check on him, it's of course out of his mouth. I'll replace it, but eventually he falls asleep chewing on his fingers or his seahorse.

So my question is, do you think it's confusing to him if I rock him til drowsy and let him fall asleep with a paci for naps? Like he might be thinking "why do I have to cry myself to sleep at night, but she gives me the paci and helps me for naps?" I wonder if I should just ditch the paci all together and hope he doesn't become a thumb sucker.

Thoughts? :)

  • I think there are two schools of thought -- one that says tackle naps and nighttime all at once, and one that says get one down first, then do the other. I think we did it all at once, to the extent that's helpful... but I can't remember the rationale. Sorry, I am no help!

  • i read somewhere (i was seriously obsessed with sleep with O) that day sleep and night sleep are compartmentalized separately in the brain, and that you can do them separate.
i think did night time first for both boys.  but the routines were the same (mostly for my own ease).

we ditched O's paci and he became a thumb sucker instantly.  D uses a pacifier, and i am hoping he will not copy O and start to use his thumb...he copies most everything O does.
  • I think we tackled both at the same time but there was still some snuggling and nursing for naps. With A we ditched the paci and he did fine, J we ditched the paci and he then became a thumb sucker and now uses both equally.

I seem to remember this is true. We focused on nights first probably cause we were desperate for a full nights sleep. We put him to sleep with a paci but didn't replace at night and he ended up self weaning around 4 months.

  • yes, obsessed is how I would describe myself too :)
I'm tempted to do it all at once to get it over with, but he is still so little. No turning back for nighttime now though - he did awesome last night. Cried for 30 min and then slept from 845-515 and right back down. A far cry from last week when he was up 4-5 times a night.
Darn that unswaddling! That's what killed his awesome sleep :(

  • We did both at once with both kids on the younger side (4-4.5 months or so).

DS1 took to it pretty well for both night and naps right away.

DS2 took to nighttime way faster and naps lagged a bit - he went down pretty easily, but took short naps for a while (until like 7 or 8 months).

We ditched the paci for both just cuz I hate finding them with sleep training. DS1 became a thumb sucker and DS2 just chews/sucks on his lovey. I haven't had any issues with having a thumb sucker.
