Stevia question

I just fed K some peach Greek yogurt and she ate the whole thing over the course of 2 days. Well I tasted it before giving to her today to make sure it was still ok and I noticed it tasted "diet-ey", but didn't think much of it. I read the container of another one in the fridge and realized I had accidentally bought nonfat that is sweetened with Stevia. I know the supposed implications of artifical sweetners, so I wanted to ask if any of you had given it to your kids or if you know if it's ok ???

Re: Stevia question

  • Stevia comes from a plant and is actually a natural sweetener, not from chemicals.

  • ok, that's good to know. But in general, they should have full fat yogurt, right ?

  • They are supposed to have full fat but I think it's NBD as long as they get enough fat overall.

  • Yep, Stevia is fine.  It has been tested in other countries for decades (Japan has used it for over 40 years).  Full fat is recommended.  It's hard to find full fat in smaller containers!  We use Fage 2% and mix it with a fruit puree to get the flavor without any extra sugar.

Yes, but I wouldn't worry about the small amount of this one that she had.

  • Full fat dairy stuff is recommended because they need the fat and calories given how much they're growing, not that non-fat things are necessarily bad (although I personally stay away from artificial sweeteners and such crap). But as a pp said, Stevia is naturally derived from a plant so I'm sure your LO is fine :)
  • Thanks for the reassurance :) I don't like Greek yogurt, so I didn't even pay attention to it. I thought all Greek yogurt was full fat lol.

  • Okay, I'm prepared to be flamed, but I've stopped eating pre packaged foods with stevia after researching a little more. I wouldn't hesitate to use true stevia, as in a liquid extract that I purchase from a legit supplier and then add myself, but I don't usually buy anything that lists stevia as an ingredient. Here's the most conscience explanation I have: https://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2013/04/25/stevia-food-babe-investigates/#more-7559

  • MississippiCatfish, I don't think you're an extremist. Just looking out for your family. That article was very interesting!  Thank you for posting it.

Sigh. Not surprising. Thanks for the info! This is why I generally just stick with food that's seen as little processing as possible, too. I don't have time to fully research every fucking thing, and most process food (pardon the generalization but) seems to have seen more time in a lab than on a tree, in a field, etc.

For yogurt, I get full fat plain in large containers (because yeah, it's very difficult to find it in small containers) and mix it with frozen or fresh berries. For myself, I add honey. For L, she seems fine with no added sweetener beyond the fruit so I just stick with that.
