Toddler Moms: Diaper Rash in a Toddler?

G is not quite 22 months.  He has a history of food sensitivites/allergies but we have gone through rounds of testing and have things pretty well isolated to a few things that we avoid.  He had an initial reaction to strawberries (not other berries, oddly) around a year but tested negative for them with the allergist, and has had numerous items with strawberries and other berries in them this summer thus far without an issue.

Last Friday, after a week that was admittledly rather fruit-heavy (so much is available and in season that it is all over the house) his poor butt exploded wihtin 24 hours with a horrible diaper rash, the likes of which we have not seen for a long time. It looked like he sat on a hot griddle, poor little man.  He had softer more frequent stools as well, and one "blowout" on Friday (again, uncommon for us for some time now) and all we can assume is that it was diet-related due to the increase in berries and fruit he had consumed (fiber + sugar + acidity?).  We pulled way back on that - which is tough as he is not a good eater and it is hard to "refuse" a food to a kid who otherwise would be content to not eat anything - and things are improving.

The real question for toddler moms is whether your almost 2-year old still gets diaper rashes like this?  G is chaged very frequently (the nanny is a bit obsessive compulsive about that and we generally change him a lot too) and he gets butt cream at the first sign of anything happening, but the onset, severity and duration of this rash took us by surprise.  I guess I thought that by this age it would be less of an issue?

Experiences, thoughts, or random comments on the joys of pre-treating toddler poop stains (gack!) welcome.

Thanks.

Re: Toddler Moms: Diaper Rash in a Toddler?

  • Dd has this issue when she eats too much fruit too. I've started giving her a daily probiotic vitamin to help, and it does. It's a gummy probiotic I got at Walmart, forgot the name. It says 2+ on the label but that's due to choking risk I think.
Is it possible it's not due to food? Maybe it's just a bug of some sort? DD gets the occasional GI bug that looks like that too.... More extreme than the usual runny fruit poop. Either way, probiotics work for her!
Otherwise, we just desitin her butt obsessively and push other non-fruit things. Hope it clears up soon!

  • K is almost 23m and she still does occasionally. Usually bc of blueberries. We went blueberry picking on Friday and she ate her weight and has had a small rash since Sat.

  • Could he be getting 2 year molars?

DD gets weird owie poos with teething and with food sensitivity as well (none confirmed by doctor, but I am sure of it).  Lots of fruit can definitely do it.  I gave DD diluted apple juice on our trip last week and she had a HUGE loose poo that caused a bad rash.

  • DD has the occasional squishy poops with diaper rash as well. Erratic enough to make it difficult to pinpoint a certain cause although I'm thinking raisins are to blame.

She also gets a blowout here and there if she get a stomach bug. I *think* some of it might also be due to her 2-yr molars.

    Sorry I'm not more help.

  • Ooh, I did not even consider raisins!  He "discovered" raisins in the past few weeks, too.  We keep the amount low, but that could be a contributing factor.  THanks!
