Ok, so the short-version question is - What do you look for in a pediatrician?
The long version is - The pedi group I take Callen to has a bunch of drs. We've seen 4-5 out of 6.
One of which I will never see again due to her flippant attitude towards the RSV he had during Nov & Dec, when we when back a week after the 4-6 wk "wait it out" (direct quote from Dr. Dumbazz) we saw a completely different dr, and he was appalled that we were not given breathing treatments, and sent us home with a scrip and a nebulizer. He also sent us home with eye drops as both eyes were extremely goopy.
Finally, a Dr. that gave a rat's tail! However, when I asked to see him several months later, I was told that he was filling in over the holidays, and was from some practice almost an hour away....so he is not an option.
Second, Cal has a clogged tear duct and everything I had seen from others on the board indicated that this should be addressed at the 9 month check up. AND the dr we choose to be the regular also stated at his 6 month that it would be assessed at the 9 mo. Well, at the 9 month, when I asked about the eye, I was told that if it had not cleared up by 12 months, they would refer me to an eye doctor. Um..........okay. So then last week at his 12 mo, we were told we needed to see the opthamologist. I was annoyed that this wasn't something they could do in-house, because I had seen from some of you where it was done as a quick proceedure at the pedi. I asked about this, and was told that they didn't have the equipment to see what exactly the problem was, and how to fix it. um....sure, whatever, lady.
Third, Every. Single. Appointment, both well and sick, I have asked about the shape of his head - he still has a bit of a flat spot, and his head leans to the left side because the left neck muscle is under-developed. As a result, (my non-expert assumption anyway) his eyes are not symetrical and the left eye more often than not looks significantly lower than the right.
All any of them tell me is, "it's nothing to worry about, it will fix itself over time." And when I've asked about maybe a helmet to fix it they've said, "no, that's not necessary, it will correct itself...blah blah blah". The MOST I've ever gotten was a few "exercises" to do with strengthening his neck - which we've done, and seem to have helped a little, but not enough.
I know this one is just cosmetic and superficial, but it still bothers me because I feel I could have prevented it somehow. But I try to console myself with the fact that Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper have the same asymmetrical issue, and they seem to be doing just fine................I KNOW, I said it was stupid!
Anyway, the point is that I don't feel like this pedi group really cares, and are rather flippant about things. I don't know if this is common with all pedi's but the reviews I'm finding of other surrounding offices aren't overly encouraging. Seems to be par for the course.
I just feel like I've failed him as a mom, because as a first timer, I have been naive to a lot of things, and thought I could trust the dr's because they knew more than me, but I have this nagging feeling that he could have had better care - and it's my fault for not finding it.
If you made it through all that...Thank you.
Re: Pedi Question
Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event.
I don't have anyone else that I can ask for recs, other than maybe my daycare - I will try that.
I guess I'm just going to have to pedi hop for a while until we find one that fits. Ugh....it shouldn't be this hard.
I would switch pedis if you are uncomfortable. I don't really know what I would look for but you could certainly set up some interviews with other practices and just tell your experience and ask how they would handle it differently. Are there other practices that accept your insurance? Any that friends or family use and recommend?
