Favorite Kids' Books?

Whenever I go to a baby shower, I always bring a book in addition to my gift. I have a few that are in my regular rotation, but I'm looking for some new ideas. Obviously I want to avoid Goodnight Moon, Guess How Much I Love You, etc. as those are almost a given.

In your opinion, what book is required reading for every baby/toddler?

  • The Golden Egg Book by Margaret Wise Brown. It was my favorite book!!!

  • DS lovvesss The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear. He also loves any Eric Carle books. When he was a year I had to hide the story Honk, Honk, Beep, Beep by Daniel Kirk. It rhymes and I had it memorized. I literally read it to him 5-10 times a day for months and months. I couldn't read it anymore!

DD hates love you forever. So do I. Kinda creepy with mom sneaking in the kids room. DD was so scared. I have heard other similar reactions.

I have that book for DS and I have yet been able to read it to him because it makes me cry every time I read it now. I never used to be this big of a wuss before I was a mother.

  • Any of the Eric Carle books. My daughter loved Brown Bear. We used to spend hours reading "Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?"
Also any of the little books that you can feel the furry animals or books that have pictures of baby's making faces. My daughter would spend a lot of time looking at those other babies and imitate their expressions. It's fun.

  • Any of the Shel Silverstein books including The Giving Tree which PP mentioned.  Where the Sidewalk ends and Light in the Attic make beautiful gifts.  Also, Eric Carle books as others have mentioned are a must. They also have board book sets for Eric Carle which are adorable.

  • My son absolutely loved Pat the Bunny when he was very young.  At 3 he still loves the Very Hungry Caterpillar .  We bought a book on a whim at Barnes and Noble about 18 months ago called Time for a Hug and we read it almost every day.  It's a really great book.

  • Thanks for all the great suggestions. I've not heard of a lot of these. Others reminded me of greats from my childhood that I'd forgotten.

  • The kids I teach love "Going on a bear hunt" and it's the type of book you can make into a game too. They also love Eric Carle books and some Dr Suess but those can get long depending on what book you get but There's a Wocket in my Pocket makes everyone smile. My personal favorite to this day is Strega Nona
  • When I was little I read a lot of Dr. Suess, even before I could read my mom read them to me. But she used to read "I'll Always Love You" by Hans Wilhelm. It's about a dog, but it was my favorite.

    Welcome Lily Anna!

You have no idea how much I'm hoping someone gets that for me I think that book is epic haha.
  • My students and my nieces all love the Pete the Cat books.  They come with a free download of the digital book, that includes music and singing.  They are very fun!

I'll Love You Forever. I just read that to DS before his nap. It is our favorite book. If I get a baby shower invite that says to bring a book it is the only one I bring.

  • My DS's favorite book right now is "Little Blue Truck" and "Little Blue Truck Leads the way".

The Monster at the End of this Book starring Lovable, Furry Old Grover is absolutely the house favorite around here.  I just bought a copy for the baby (we've already worn out several copies), and our boys wouldn't let me get through the door before they grabbed it and sat down to read it together.

For a girl, any of the Olivia books are awesome.  As I understand it, they've turned it into a TV show.  I have no idea how that is, but the books are terrific.
DS loves the Olivia tv show! I think it's pretty hilarious myself :)
