Going to a concert okay?

edited July 2013 in November 2013 Moms

I'm going to the JT/JayZ concert at the Rose Bowl on Sunday with my sister and a GF. I will be 25w6d that day.

I had asked my doctor weeks ago if it was okay (I was less than 20 weeks at that time) but I am assuming that she was assuming I was going to go then, not while I'm this far along. She said it was perfectly fine. I have sent her a note again just to make sure.

My Hubby's brother (a father himself) is concerned that I'm going and I can understand. I am very back and forth about it as well. Our seats are far enough that we won't be directly in front of speakers but I still don't know how loud its going to be. Also, I don't know if there will be smoking (legal or illegal if you know what I mean.)

My plan for the concert is 1) If there is smoking of ANY kind, even a hint, I'm going to leave my seat and go to a place with fresh air - I have always been that way - pregnant or not. 2) I plan to take breaks from the concert noise and if I feel its too much, I'm going to leave.

Have any of you gone to a concert before (with this baby or previous babies) at this point in your pregnancy and everything turned out okay (or not okay for that matter)?

Re: Going to a concert okay?

  • Go.  I went to 2 concerts with DS 20 weeks and 24 weeks.  The one at 20 weeks was indoors.  I went to a concert this year when I was around 15 weeks.  You'll be fine.  DH made me sit more than I wanted to but to make him happy, I did.

  • Go and enjoy. I went to 4 concerts when pregnant with DD. I think I was around 25 weeks during the last one. They are well protected in there (plus it is naturally very loud in there) and it sounds like you plan to use common sense and not be in a mosh pit.
I was going to mention the bolded part.  I read somewhere that it's the equivalent of a loud vacuum cleaner in there already, and they won't hear the concert to the extent that you will.  Around 20 weeks I was on a cruise and the foghorn was constantly going off and no harm done!
  • I'm going to a concert at 34 weeks! Vampire Weekend. I'm stoked. It's at a theater with seats and I got our seats pretty far back and on an aisle on purpose to get away from speakers and so I can get in and out easily.

  • I'm 25 weeks tomorrow and going to the Jay-Z/JT show in San Francisco tonight! Can't wait! Just hope we're not in a section that stands the whole dang show!

  • Go and have fun!  And then make sure to save the ticket stub and photos and put them in baby's book as keepsakes.  My parents saved stubs from the concerts they went to with me (um, Journey and Bob Seger and such) and I love seeing them in my book and imagining being there with them. Your baby will at some point really enjoy learning about the things you liked and how you were when you were pregnant.

NICE!!!! Have fun!!! I heard they're going to perform like 30 something songs!

We got our tickets right before I found out I was pregnant so I couldn't get an aisle seat...hope our neighbors don't mind me always getting up!

I love Journey!!!! That's a good idea...then he can see all the fun things Mommy did when he was in my uterus - LOL!

Thanks for all the replies ladies! Still waiting to hear from my dr but this helps put me at ease a little more :).
  • I'm going to Jay Z and Justin in a couple weeks too and will be almost 25 weeks. I haven't talked to my dr but I feel better that its outdoors in case there is any smoking. We're in the first row of our section right before the field so I'm guessing there will be security near there and they'll stop anyone who smokes. I just hope it's not too hot out.

Oooooh! I too feel better that it's an outdoor venue because an enclosed venue would be MUCH louder esp with all the screamers (my sister being one of them!) I didn't think about the heat - I hope it's not too hot either...

BTW, my sis found an example set list online on Wikipedia: Just search for "Legends of the Summer" - I'm using that to plan my breaks :P
  • I just went to that concert last Friday at 21 weeks . It was amazing and glad I didn't miss it . Only problem was it was about 100 degrees out that night ! Go and enjoy it !
  • I wish I was going to the jayz concert. Enjoy.

  • I went to a music festival a couple of weeks ago (Forecastle in Louisville), stood pretty close to the speakers for multiple shows, and was constantly trying to figure out where the smell of weed was coming from. Everything was fine at my appointment a few days after, and I actually think LO enjoyed herself. If increased movement is any indication, she was rocking out in there!
  • I know lots of people are going to call me a crazy, but most of these responses are anecdotal and not based on actual data. As my profession deals rather heavily with the hearing-impaired, ethically I just can't not encourage a little caution. I think the concert is probably fine, but you could pad your belly a bit and make an effort not to expose yourself to the noise for too long.
I'm sorry, I know I'm a worry-wart, but hearing is one of my pet projects.

I don't think you're crazy at all - that's why I posted the question...for experiences and information from people like you and those that have gone to concerts while pregnant.

My doctor's office called back and they said it was totally okay BUT I'm still going to exercise caution and common sense since I really don't know how loud it will be for him. I'm going to take my breaks from the noise and if I feel like he's moving a lot (he's a pretty quiet baby to begin with) I'll take that as a signal that he is not enjoying himself.

I've already told my sister that if I'm not comfortable with the noise level, I'm just going to take a walk around the venue in areas where its not so loud.

Oh also...I'd been thinking padding my belly would be a good idea. Any suggestions on how to do that? I don't think a pillow would be allowed in the venue - LOL!

When I went shooting, I wore my full panel maternity pants and layered a few tank tops. Wasn't the most comfortable solution ever, but I felt better. Sound doesn't travel as well through cloth as it does through fluid, so I figured the extra cloth would be helpful.
That was a few weeks ago, baby's hearing wasn't as well developed. Next time I go, I think I will add a baby blanket (light flannel maybe) under the maternity pants band. Should hide well enough under there.

  • Haha! I went to that exact concert on Monday in Chicago!  (It was great btw)!  There was definitley some illegal smoking going on - again it was an open-air venue, so it didn't bother me and was certainly not a constant thing.  I say go and have fun!

Ooooh thanks! I hope its not too hot so I can layer my belly!

Haha...hopefully we're in a section where that isn't an issue!

I'll look that up. I plan on taking breaks too. I've been getting pretty sore under my ribs from sitting for too long. It's gotten a little better over the last week but I'll have to take breaks to stretch. I told my husband nothing is keeping me from the concert though. Haha

I don't think I'll pad up my belly a though because if its hot, it'll just make me much more hot and uncomfortable and I can't see that being good for the baby either. I'll just be careful.

  • I was supposed to go to that concert tonight in San Francisco , unfortunately my BFF had a family emergency and I am always so tired after 7:00 pm! We had amazing seats too!! Next time we will go. We've gone to every show he and Nsync put on where we live , so missing one is NBD.
