Pools

Are you or have you taken LO to the pool? What age did your pedi say is ok for the pool? It's super hot here and we would like to go to the pool. We have a float with a canopy for LO but we aren't sure if its ok. Unfortunately we just moved so we don't have a pedi here yet to ask. We are still waiting for our new patient paper work!

Re: Pools

  • The floats with the canopies are usually for babies that can sit up on their own. The one I have is for 9 months and older. This one: https://www.swimways.com/baby-spring-float-sun-canopy-p-33.aspx

I don't know when pools are okay.

  • The kids in our family start swimming early - about 6-8 weeks old. I am not released to swim until 6-8 weeks post partum anyway. Once I can go, we're going to swim at our family pool. We plan to go in the evening, well outside of "burn time" but water is still warm. DH or I will just hold Baby & dangle feet in water. Germs & high chlorine at public pools kinda freak me out. Also, our public pool stores their water underground, so it's too cold for little one to swim in it. Just be sure to take it slow & wash off the chlorine when done...happy swimming!
  • I dipped Graham in at a few weeks old. I've never realized that people asked their pedi about taking their kids to the pool. Just use common sense. Put protective clothing on them, sunscreen, make sure they don't get overheated, etc.

  • Also, those floats are for babies that can sit up on their own. You'll need to hold LO for now. If you want, buy a water sling or wrap to help you hold him in the water.

  • I took my LO at less than a month.
  • My pedi said his recommendation was 2-3 months and that was based on their weak immune systems. Didn't have anything to do with the sun/heat.
