Gd moms- When did you get a plan?

I got a call Tuesday that I failed one of the readings on my 3 hour test. They said I am not gd but are still referring me to a diabetic center. I am a Still waiting for a call and am not sure what to eat. I have a huge sweet tooth and have cut out juice but now I find myself stressing every time I eat a carb because I am it sure what I am supposed it be doing. How long until you had a diet/ plan to follow? Don't want to harm me or the baby

Re: Gd moms- When did you get a plan?

  • Welcome to the GD club :)  There are many many lovely ladies on this board with GD, so glad you are here.  I was Dx'd at 25 weeks, didn't have my counseling apt until 27 weeks, and while I am not a physician or dietician I can tell you what my OB told me to do during the interim.

    - Start with the obvious: cut out sweets/candy, pop, juice, etc.
    - Your body still needs carbs to grow a healthy baby and to keep you healthy, so don't worry about that!  Try to cut back a bit on things like bread and pasta portion wise - that does not mean cut them out completely. When you do eat these things, try and reach for the whole grain items.
    - Same goes for fruits. I was a HUGE fruit eater, especially since it's summertime, so this has been really hard for me. You can still enjoy them, just not an entire platter full!
    - You can never go wrong with fresh veggies and lean protein. Think carrots, turkey, broccoli, chicken, egg whites, etc.
    - I now chew sugar free gum like it's saving my life - and they come in all sorts of delish flavors. Having some after a meal is kinda like dessert...sorta...lol.  I'm also a fan of those carb free flavored drink things (currently working on a lemonade flavored one).

Try not to stress too much about it. Having the GD Dx freaked me out as well, especially that waiting period before your counseling appointment, but as long as you think "what would a healthy eater eat?" it'll get you by.  You can do it!

  • It took me about a week to get the plan.  I felt like my process was a little slow, and I hope that didn't hurt me and my girl in the long run.  I had the 3 hour test on July 3, got the Dx on July 8, and didn't get my plan until July 15.  I was 31 weeks when I finally got my plan.

  • I didn’t get a plan, because it is hard to plan what your body will and will not like. Instead I got a little brochure on the do’s and don’ts and I received my glucose meter (via Rx from my OB to my pharmacy) and I have been trial & erroring my plan out ever since.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I have a sweet tooth as well, and like PP have stated it is all about portion control.

Don’t try and focus on mis-diagnosis or semi-failing your GD test. Just play the game cautiously and ‘act’ like you have GD.

  • Thank you. That link was so helpful, I feel much better. There were lots of tears on Tuesday. I am still waiting for my plan but have been trying to eat more proteins and watch my carbs/sweets. The first day I felt like I was on a diet so I made sure today that I ate and didn't let myself get hungry.

I was always told if you're hungry you're doing it wrong. It's OK to be upset and feel sad but I promise you it's not that bad (I did it twice!). :)
