zofran question-XP

I was switched from reglan to zofran yesterday due to another sudden weight drop over the last week. Yesterday I was getting sick every 15-20 minutes, and the afternoon when I started the zofran I was only sick twice. Today it's not so great.

Every 20-30 minutes I'm having really intense and powerful dry heaving, to the point where it hurts, but nothing comes up.

I know that's the point, to have nothing come up, but the dry heaving is pretty darn miserable and painful.

Is that normal? I know I can call my doctor, but I'm not actually getting sick so I feel a little wimpy complaining.

Re: zofran question-XP

  • I would call the dr. I think the point of zofran is kind of turn off the need to heave. For me, it didn't get rid of the nausea, but it did keep me from throwing up, or heaving if there is nothing to throw up. I don't know how much you are taking, but I was on 8 mg, 3x a day. I once had to take 12 mg.

Oh, and you might want to take colace while on zofran, or forget about pooping until LO comes out.

    GL.

  • Ugh, sorry to hear you're so sick. I was on zofran the whole first tri of my pregnancy since I couldn't keep anything down and was puking a ton. IME, it not only took away the vomiting but also acted like phenergan and took away my nausea as well.

In your situation, as I've read your past posts, I'd say this is a step in the right direction, since you are no longer lising fluids by vomiting, but I'd you're still dry heaving to the point of it being painful, I'd say it wouldn't hurt to give the doc a call. You're not being a wimp by any means! You're sick as hell, and your dr is there to help you!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I really hope you start to feel better soon! Hang in there mama.

Yeah normal. I had HG very bad and was on Zofran, Regina and phenergan. The dry heaving is the worst. I would nor ally drink something just so I would throw up instead of dry heaving. My dry heaving normally resulted in blood coming up from straining
    Mother fucking shit.

I'm so tired of this and am only 9 weeks. HG lasted till 24 weeks with DS.

I wanted this to be my miracle drug.

I'm going to go have a cry of frustration and talk to my midwife.

  • I took Zofran 3 x daily during the earliest part of my last pregnancy. I will say that the first few days on it were iffy, and I was still heaving for the better part of that first week. By the beginning of the second week, the heaving had abated, and I was just stuck with that awful hangover-esque nausea. Have they considered doing a Zofran pump for you? Sounds like with your HG you would be a candidate. And I totally second PP's suggestion of Colace. It should be your BFF. Zofran poops are  TERRIBLE. Hope you find some relief soon!

I know the last thing you probably want is another med right now, but is adding phenergan out of the question for you? Or have you already tried it with no.success? Maybe zofran and phenergan together may be the cocktail you need.

Eta..sorry for the shiitty quoting. TB is screwing it all up!

  • It seems to be normal for me. I'm on zofran and I can now eat and drink without throwing it up, whereas before I threw up everything that went on my mouth, but I do still throw up or dry heave daily and am in a constant state of nausea.

  • DW is still on Zofran at 33 weeks.  It's been a battle with morning sickness throughout the pregnancy.  Periodically she will skip a day to see if she's kicked it, but inevitably she wakes up at 5AM with the dry heaves.

I hope your morning sickness stops after the 1st Tri.
