I can't be the only one gaining

OK I almost had a total meltdown this morning. Yesterday I was getting ready for work and had a hard time getting into my dress pants. Of course I rationalize this by thinking I should not have put my pants in the dryer, they must have shrank. (I have been using a bella band for a few weeks, the issue is my hips and butt). This morning I had the SAME issue with a different pair of pants so I went in the bathroom and weighed myself.  Almost 12 pounds already, I'm only in week 12. Ugh. When I was PG with DS I gained over 50 pounds so I have been more vigilant about what I eat and making sure I stay active. Please tell me I'm not the only one gaining quickly..  What have you gained so far?

  • I've been so sick that I'm losing weight. Prob not what you want to hear but I'm just as concerned
  • Loading the player...
  • I've gained 3-4lbs so far.

With DS I lost 12 lbs in 1st tri because I was so sick and could hardly eat.

  • Oh phew that makes me feel better... Did that go away once you passed the second trimester
  • Cdnsunshine- Yes, it did! I gained 25 lbs total with DS by the time I had him. :) By about 13-14 wks, I could eat again.

I have a friend that was sick her entire pregnancy and only gained 15 lbs...

  • Oh boy. I don't know much longer I can do this for... Lol lets hope it goes away!

Was her baby healthy? That's my biggest concern that the peanut won't be healthy!! If I can keep something down its complete junk. It's a huge change for me because I'm used to a clean eating diet. I think it's also making me feel worse lol
  • I am not sure exactly what I've gained so far (don't want to know!) but I tend to gain a lot in the first tri. If you are constipated it makes it look worse on the scale, as your body is hanging onto extra... Well, poop.
  • Cdnsunshine- the baby was perfectly healthy and HUGE!!! lol Almost 9 lbs at birth. The baby will take what it needs from you, so you'll be the one not feeling so great. Make sure you stay hydrated. Are you on any nausea meds? It would be worth taking them if not.

  • No nausea meds. Not sure how I feel about taking them! I don't like Tylenol even when I am not pregnant so it scares me to put them in my system and the effects it COULD have! Especially if babe is taking what it needs I can suffer the horrific 24/7 nausea! I'm hoping it will come to an end here soon.... If it doesn't I might reconsider! Anyone else this sick still?

Try Sea Bands. They work WONDERS for nausea and no medicine involved. It'd be worth a shot! :)

  • I had lost five pounds but have gained back two, so I think I'm moving past the losing stage. But, gain/loss aside, my belly is HUGE. Bloat, blump, whatever you want to call it, it's ridiculous - I look much further along than I am. Seems like our bodies all handle pregnancy quite differently.

I felt the same way about medicine until my nausea turned into vomiting. My DH, who is also a RN, convinced me that going to the hospital for dehyrdration would be more stressful to me and the baby. You just have to judge if you are getting enough fluids and food. Zofran is very safe and an old drug, however the constipation side effect is awful!!!

  • I'm just past 12 weeks and at my appt a week ago I was up 2-3 lbs since the start.  Even though I have only gained a few pounds I feel like my fat has re-distributed in new areas.

I've gained a few pounds and I've already "retired" a few pairs of my already too tight jeans.
I lost 19 pounds with DD, I only gained 12 pounds with her and she was PERFECTLY healthy! :)

  • I haven't weighed myself for a few weeks, but I can tell you that I'm doing ALL of my jeans and shorts up with rubber bands these days, so you're not the only one doing a bit of gaining ;-D All this, and I started out slightly underweight - I've come a long way, I am definitely NOT underweight after the last two months or so! Ha!

If you're just dealing with nausea, fine. But if you're vomitting regularly? You should take meds. Dehydration and severe malnutrition (like 24 hours of losing everything you put in your system) is not safe.

I've been sick and lost weight to the point where my body is currently breaking down fat and muscle stores. Baby's still doing well, but that's obviously really unhealthy/unsafe for me, and it could eventually impact baby (50% of hyperemesis patients have babies with smaller growth). So meds are obviously safer than that!

The medicines they give you now are much safer and much more closely tested. You won't hurt your baby. You could start by trying some B6 and unisom, those are over the counter. Ginger gum may help the nausea.

And OP, don't stress too much. You're eating healthy and doing your best. You'll gain what you gain.

  • Yea I throw up regularly. I think there has been maybe 8 sporadic days since I've been pregnant that i havnt lost my lunch... Dinner... Breakfast lol!

Maybe it's worth looking into! Ill talk to my doc next apt!! Thanks for all the support
  • I 'm sorry to hear so many people are sick! I have been very fortunate this time to only have mild m/s. I suppose that is why I have gained so much already this time! I will say that I am constipated and my boobs have grown a full cup size! So I'm attributing at least 5 of my extra pounds to boobs and poop! :-)

Also, someone posted like a week ago that they weren't looking at the scale or worrying about weight and many agreed. Their plan was to focus on good food and exercise and not worry about numbers. So some may not be looking into any posts about weight and some may not have any idea.

  • According to my scale I've only gained a pound so far. When I was pregnant with DS I only gained 13 pounds. I was never sick and definitely wasn't trying not to gain weight. DS was perfectly healthy 7 pounds 8 ounces. I have a huge sweet tooth and tried to lay off of the sweets so I think that may have contributed. I wouldn't mind the same thing happening this time if it still results in a healthy little babes.

  • I've gained 4 lbs.  All my clothes fit fine though.  I think a lot of its bloat.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I think I gained under 5 lbs going from my last OB appt.

  • I have been avoiding the scale like the plague, so I'm not sure, but I guarantee I'm up at least a few.  I'll know for sure when I have my next appt. next week.  I spent the last two years losing weight (non-baby-related, this is my first) and was still overweight when I got pregnant, so I'm trying not to think about how fast I'm going to get back up to my highest weight. I gain really fast in general--can gain 5 lbs on a week of vacation, easy--and not while pregnant.  My body is NOT very forgiving in this way.  So, worry not!  I've definitely gained a few, I'm guessing (hoping) 5.  And yes, you can definitely attribute some of those pounds to boobs and poop and water, for sure!

  • I'm not sure about my weight (I never look at the scale and ask to not be told unless there's a problem when I'm at the doctor's office), but all of my dress/work pants are tight around my bloated baby belly. I actually switched to maternity pants this week and it's a huge relief, so much more comfortable. At first I felt embarrased bing that I"m only 11.5 weeks along, but being comfortable trumps it all. I have been horrible about working out, but I ordered a heart rat monitor and hope to turn that bad habit around this weekend now that a tiny bit of my energy is coming back.

  • I know women who gain 25lbs and women who gain 60lbs and everywhere in-between. Your diet influences it to a degree, but some women put on more weight during pg than others.

IMO it's one small factor in healthy pregnancy and there is a wide range of normal. The "average" is 5lbs the first tri, but some will gain more early and some will gain more later.

If you're eating healthy, and staying active then I would try not to focus on the number on the scale. It's a pretty unreliable indicator of health for pg and not-pg people.

  • I would just focus on eating as healthy as much as possible. And remember that everyone is different when it comes to pregnancy. My mom gained over 50 lbs with each of her pregnancies, and she had morning sickness with 2 out of 3 of them.
I on the other hand had hyperemesis with my daughter and I lost 23 lbs in the first 4 months, I then gained 25 lbs during the rest of my pregnancy, so technically I only gained 2 lbs my entire pregnancy and I had a very healthy 8 lb 1 oz baby girl!
This time around i'm not as sick as last time but i'm already down 5 pounds.....everyone handles pregnancy differently

  • I have gained 10 lbs in 11 weeks. I'm overweight to begin with so I'm somewhat scared about how much I will gain by February. My work pants and casual shorts do not fit. Using a tummy sleeve has been so much more comfortable this week. I have a pair of maternity pants but am afraid to wear them to work just yet. I don't want to out myself until I'm 13 weeks. The last two days I've looked pregnant and have gotten the side eye from one person at work.
    Baby #1 due 2/10/14!
  • I am in a similiar situation.  I will be twelve weeks on Friday (siggy isn't working yet) and have gained about 6 pounds.  I gained 55 lbs with my first pregnancy.  DD was born at 41.5 weeks weighing 9 lbs 5 oz.  With nursing and Weight Watchers, I was able to lose all the baby weight and another 5 pounds in about 5 months.  However, I was so uncomfortable at the end of my pregnancy.  I would love to only gain 35 - 40 pounds this time but I am not too optimistic.  I really should cut out caffeine free coke and all the baked goods I've been eating.

  • I gained 48 lbs. with DS!  This time around I'm 11 weeks and have gained 7 lbs.  Sometimes I think your body gains what it needs to gain.  I'm trying to enjoy the pregnancy since I know I'm going to have to workout and diet to get back to pre preg whether I gain 48 lbs again or 35lbs.

I love this post and this advice. Your body is going to do what your body is going to do, in this pregnancy. Everybody and every pregnancy is different. This is what keeps me sane. I have not gained anything yet but I have developed horrible cellulite on the back of my legs that made me cry last weekend and I refused to wear a bathing suit. There is no perfect, no right, and no wrong as long as you are doing what she said "eating healthy, and staying active" you are amazing and you are creating life. YOU ROCK!!!

  • I think I've gained 5 lbs so far....with my DD1 my weight gain was 50 lbs and with other two kids around 30 lbs each....so I hope I stay in the normal range this time around cuz it took me 3 years to get to my normal weight after the first pregnancy. Breastfeeding also helped to shed the pounds after the last pregnancy.

  • My cousin was very nauseous with her first pregnancy and could only eat carbs for the majority of the time. She ended up gaining 50 lbs and is relatively small-framed. Her baby was healthy and she says because she breast fed she was down to her high school weight in no time. Everyone is different, but it makes me not worry about gaining as much!
  • You are not alone! I have gained a considerable amount already and im only 12 weeks! I started at 103 and have gained 10 so far. Not to worry, some gain more early on. I think its hard not to especially when you feel sick and all that calms it down are carbs!

I've gained 3 pounds so far.  However, my hips are spreading and my tummy is thicker.  As a result, I can't wear any of my pre-preggo pants.  My hips have spread so much that I can't even get away with a belly band.  But it's been so hot lately that I can't stomach even putting on a pair of pants.
To be honest, I'll take the gain over sickness any day!
  • I love that the OP is concerned about too much gain and 80% of the responses are about weight loss or how little everyone is gaining.

OP- I've already gained 8 pounds and my hands and feet are swollen like balloons.

With #1 I ate healthy and exercised and still gained 65 pounds (most of it water). It was gone after 3 months while a lot of my friends who barely gained any weight were still struggling to lose at 6 months.

The moral of the story: your body will do what it wants to do and, as long as you are eating well and staying active, there's not much you can do about it.

Rest assured that I am going to be a tubby Mama right along with you!

I'm 10 weeks today and I've gained about 3lbs. I'm having a hard time not stressing about the scale. I was overweight before becoming pregnant and I had just lost about 25lbs. Having to shift my mindset to it being ok to gain is hard. I'm having a hard time finding the balance between feeling like its ok to gain but not going overboard. It's hard too since I feel like I've been dieting my whole life so it's the one time I don't have to "diet". I'm hoping to only gain 20-25lbs throughout the pregnancy, but after gaining 3 in just 10 weeks, I'm not sure if that's going to happen. I am just eating when I'm hungry, but I feel like I'm always hungry!
  • I've gained about 5 lbs, but it  looks like a lot more. There's some bloat and constipation factored in there, but the butt and thighs of my pants are tighter, not just the waistband. I am about to take DS to the pool, with my bump in a bikini! I haven't been able to be very active or eat very healthily for the last few weeks, but I've felt a reduction in symptoms in the last few days, and I expect that it will be good for both me and 'swamp thing' (as we're affectionately calling it due to terrible u/s photos) to get back to eating something besides bland carbs and doing yoga.
I'm convinced that TheBump is having a posthumous feud with Steve Jobs and you can't post siggys from Macs.
