Working Moms

First work trip

I have managed to avoid travel but now I have a trip in a week. I will be gone 3 days and nights. DH is ready and I know they will be fine, but she is definitely in a mommy phase right now due to teething. For a 17 month old, do you recommend telling them that you are leaving? Do you Skype or FaceTime with them, or does that seem to make things worse? Obviously depends on the kid, but at the age there are probably some common reactions. DD is pretty advanced so I think she'll get it, but I'm afraid she's going to freak at night when she thinks about the fact that I'm not imminently coming home.

Re: First work trip

  • Yes, I would of course tell her.  I think she'd be MORE freaked out by  "mommy just disappeared" than she would be by you telling her "I'm going to be gone for a couple nights but I'll be home soon!".

  • My kids are more of "love the one you're with" types. At that age my kids were really into a routine, but if you aren't an option the kid might not really be all that concerned.
  • I would tell her but for us skyping just made him more upset. My DH was great he sent pictures and videos all the time and I missed my son it was glorious to sleep in (To 7:30 am, LOL) not have to clean, or cook or take care of a toddler, LOL. I missed him but a the 3-4 days was amazing and I came back refreshed and so happy.
  • Before I left for an overnight work trip, we made a video of me reading DD a bedtime story and singing songs with her. Then DH put it on my phone too, so I could watch it before bed.

DD was 2 at the time, so she might have understood it a little more than a 17 mos old, but it still might be a nice thing to do. I have to go on another trip next week. It's hard, but it will be ok.

  • At that age I did not Skype - it would get him super upset and looking for me. I just gave a big hug and kiss before I left and told him to have fun with daddy. They did great.

OK, thanks, this is really helping. I am going to tell her, but not Skype, and I think a video is a great idea.
