Success after IF

varicocele

Anyone have success after varicocele treatment? How long after the surgery?

Re: varicocele

  • Im not quite sure what you are asking but I will try and answer anyway. If you are talking about YH then MH had a vericocele when we were dating that needed emergency surgery or he would have lost one of his testies. The dr told us that when we were ready to have children we would need to do a SA and if the sperm count was low then he would need to take Clomid. So I think to answer your question, recoverey depends on what your dr recommends and the severity of the vericocele. If sperm count was effected then he may be able to take Clomid to help. Ask your dr. HTH.

ETA. MHs count wasnt effected by the vericocele and his surgery was over 10 years ago. We had DS 2 years ago. GL.

  • Hi there. My husband has a varicocle, but we decided to skip surgery. We did a lot of research on our own and saw three different urologists and ultimately came to the conclusion that his SA numbers were so low that surgery was unlikely to get us out of IVF territory. His count was under 100K, motility was around 20 percent, and we were under 3 percent morph.

Sbrowns08 and I got MFI diagnoses at the same time. Her husband's numbers were a little better, so they did surgery. They tried three more IUIs after the appropriate wait time, but ended up finally having success with their first IVF. We do occasionally see varicocele surgery really help the DHs around here, though.

Basically, the research says that the better the numbers are to start, the better the chances are for the varicocele surgery to really improve things. I found one study that said that you could expect 2 to 5 times the number of sperm after surgery. In our case, that didn't change our situation, but maybe it would for you! Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • My husband has two varicoceles.  We also saw three different urologists who said the surgery is hit or miss and they all told us that most don't see improvements.  So, we skipped it.

My husband had a *decent* count (varied anywhere from 10 million to 50 million pre wash depending on the SA) and his morph varied between 1% and 2%.  We had success with IUI and have also gotten pregnant on our own.
