When to talk to your boss?

I am only four weeks and five days preg, due march 24.  I'm a teacher so I won't go back to work until August, but wasn't sure when a good time to bring this up with my boss would be... We are being pretty open about telling people, rather than waiting for the end of the first trimester.  I anticipate that he will be supportive, but will need to make arrangements for a sub while I'm out... Opinions?

Re: When to talk to your boss?

  • If you are telling people then I would tell your boss when you report back for the school year.i think he would appreciate hearing it from you and not someone else.

  • I'm also a teacher and waited until after first trimester to tell my principal with both of my kids. I did tell him first before anyone else on staff.
  • I am a teacher also, due feb 17 and I plan on telling my P when I return in august. We will hv told friends and family, but I want to tell him in person and I won't be making a special trip to do that. Last time he started looking for my replacement one month prior to my due date. Made me nervous as he!l. Do you know if you'll be out the rest of the year or what your return date will be? I haven't decided yet so its another reason I'm waiting.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I had DD March 23, I waited until the end of the 1st tri to tell the principal, so I think it was mid September.   I let the end of February and took the rest of the year off and it was plenty of time for them to make arrangements.
  • I agree with telling your principal before any other staff.  Things leak quickly in schools. ;)  I waited 7 weeks and 12 weeks with my two.  If you've already told other staff (even friends) then I'd call your principal right away.

  • Since there are many Dr's apts involved after your initial pregnancy/blood test, I told my boss as soon as I got the final confirmation from my Dr,  I wanted my boss to know why I am taking so much sick leave and  have an idea of approximately when I may take my maternity leave.  Just a common courtesy/respect and simply a personal preference.
