eliding nick names bother you?

For example, if Valerie Lastname went by Val, her name out loud would sound like VA.LAST.name. The second 'L' elides away. Anyone have a name like this? Is it confusing for people? Many nick names I like cause this problem for my name.

Our last name starts with a C but has the hard C or K sound. I hadn't thought of this issue, but I guess it would happen for any name like Nick, Erik, etc.
Funny because there was an earlier post by someone looking for names that end in the hard K sound.
  • My name is Kate. My last name begins with T. Because Kay is a name in its own right, I have to be careful to really enunciate my name properly. So that people know I am Kate T________ rather than Kay T_______.

It's a bit of a hassle, and I wouldn't choose to do it to my own child, but it would be less of a hassle if Kay wasn't also a name.

  • My maiden name was Jennifer F---------.  I also had the enunciation issue.  People sometimes thought I was Jenna F--------.  But I guess I'm a mumbler.

I am not eliminating all names that end with the same letter that my last name starts with, but I am avoiding names that would still be names without the last letter... Like I won't use Gretel L------- b/c it might sound like Greta L-----.  I'm on the fence about Michael, in case it sounds like Micah.

  • My last names starts with an R and there are a zillion names ending with R that I love and cannot use for the reason

  • My husband's name is Eric, and our last name starts with a k. They don't run together as much, but it's quite a harsh sound in general. Thus, I'm trying to avoid similar issues with our kids.
