I keep hearing that losing weight is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise. I wish that were reversed. I am so much better at going to work out than controlling my diet. I do pretty well during the day, but after dinner snack attacks hit...plus, wine. Also, ice cream.
Any tips for avoiding ruining a good day at night?
Re: 80/20 food versus exercise...really?
yeah it pretty much is 80% diet. I remember when I was loosing weight, the weeks that I didn't eat as well I wouldn't really loose. BUT working out is really important to me and I wouldn't have done it as fast without it. I do believe working out speeds up the process plus it makes you feel better.
As far as snacking after dinner. I would eat cheese and crackers or fruit. Sometimes if I had a real sweet tooth that night I would just go to bed so I wouldn't think about it.

Ok, I will get on board. My self-control just plummets after dinner. I have some good swaps I can make. I just need to consistently make them. DH has a real sweet tooth. One thing I think I am going to try--when we get ice cream, I'm going to get flavors he likes that I don't. I love Skinny Cow. They aren't that bad calorie-wise. I also like sugar free Jello pudding. Got to keep those things around.
I always say I will only drink wine in restaurants, but I really love having a glass on the porch at night. I guess I just need to factor that in and adjust elsewhere.
Thanks for the advice!
Brush your teeth after dinner. Also, when the mood to snack strikes, drink a glass of ice cold water. Between the 2, the urge usually goes away.
Have small, rich snacks on hand when that doesn't work. 2 squares of dark chocolate should satisfy the urge and it is usually too rich to eat a lot of.

You're right! I need to get more dark chocolate in the house. 2 squares of that worked when Dh went through a Ben and Jerry's Peanut Butter World ice cream phase. That stuff is like kryptonite.
I do this too, but I also heard that dinner SHOULDN'T be your biggest meal. I guess I need to get the nighttime snacking under control and then try to rebalance the calories during the day.
I have the same problem! Before pg, not so much these past few weeks. Here is what I did:
I made my dinner plate with appropriate portions and added a little extra of my fave part of whatever I made that night. Then I sat down with DH and took a few bites. I ate slowly while telling him tons of stuff about the day and going over whatever is coming up next in our lives. This kept me from eating too fast and made me full faster. I would only end up eating half of what was only my plate. Then I saved it and when hunger strikes, bam! I would not let myself eat anything else other than the rest of my dinner at most! Sometimes that was enough to turn me off from snacking completely and other nights I just ate the rest of my fave dish. My portion of food for the entire evening ended up being just the dinner and an appropriate amount at that.
Also a little light exercise in the evening helped to stifle my evening appetite after dinner. Gardening, walking the dogs, light housework, etc. Good luck!

I've heard this too, but I'm not a huge breakfast/lunch eater, so dinner is always my biggest meal. Really if you eat 4 hours before you go to bed you should be fine.
I do need to slow down when I eat. DH and I are both teachers, so we are sort of conditioned to eat very quickly.
Eat a properly sized dinner. Eat dinner a little later. Go to bed earlier and don't stay up late. Have low calorie snacks ready, like popcorn that's not coated in butter, laughing cow cheese, etc. Choose snacks with a little protein, not just sugar. Try replacing ice cream with Popsicles that are plain fruit. If you are really craving chocolate, eat a small amount but feed the rest to DH so it's not sitting around. Take a walk after dinner. Drink water and chew gum.
ETA and write down everything you eat, being honest. I used myfitnesspal.com before I was pregnant to track my eating habits.
