I agree. Growing up, my parents always bought new cars, but my DH's family always bought preowned. We bought our first car together after we got married and decided to buy preowned and ended up having to fixed a few things on it after a couple months. I think it all depends on one's financial situation and preference. I don't thinking buying a brand new car is for everyone, but it sure is nice!
What scares me about pre-owned is they are usually coming off of leases - and I know quite a few people that lease cars and beat the ever living sh*t out of them (no oil changes, hard driving in general) because they're just going to turn it in anyway... I also know people who specialized in rolling back the odometers, but I don't think that can be done as easily anymore. But I do get the depreciation factor in buying new.
I bought my car new in 2006 and paid it off 3 years later - I plan on driving it to at least 100,000 miles (only at about 70k now). I think if your long term plan is to own the car for 10+ years, then buying new makes sense.
I did the same thing! I bought a brand new car in 2006 and paid it off in 3 years. I still have the car and absolutely love it!
I'm running late today but here goes:
Yesterday I was in a Dunkin donuts drive thru, getting decaf, and the SUV in front of me had a stick figure family on the right back window. On the left side back window it said 'In loving memory of our son Nicolas, date,' and a BABY stick person under that. I don't even feel sorry for her for losing a kid...since she wants TOTAL strangers to know her buisness like that. WTF
Edited for mobile fluckery
You don't feel sorry for her losing a kid just because she has a memory sticker on her car?? You are a special kind of idiot.
Yeah, I don't even...why should her child's death be a secret? Do you feel the same every time you see anything commemorating a loss? RIP stickers with praying hands? Memorial golf tournaments?
I think all kids should be taught chores and basic living skills at a young age.
My 15 year old sister asked me if liked to cook at her age. I told her that I really didn't cook anything until I was married. My mom always did everything for me, laundry, cooking, cleaning, ect. I feel like I was totally unprepared for the real world.
This. DS is 10 and does chores and has for years now. He has chores that he has to do like clean his room, make his bed, put away his laundry, clean his bathroom, etc. and then there are optional chores he can help me with, and I pay him a small allowance for it. But, his must do chores have to be done before he can do a earning money chore.
My parents did everything for me as well, and I felt disadvantaged when I moved out on my own as well.
My five year old folds her laundry, makes her bed and has to keep her room cleaned. Inspection is done Sunday at 5 and if all is done decently she gets $7.00.
I had chores for as long as I can remember. When I turned 16 I got a part time job and was responsible for my cell and car insurance payments. When I was 18 (still in highschool) I had to take over my car payment as well as clothes and other things I needed.
I feel like the queen of budgeting and hope that I can prepare my kids half as good as my mom did me.

What an insensitive and idiotic thing to say. I can assure you this is definitely the most unpopular opinion on TB history.

Well you nailed the "unpopular" portion of this post... I have a hard time judging the way people process their grief, especially with the loss of a child.

Agree. This sentiment pretty much makes you a horrible person.
Married my love 8-25-12
TTC #1 September 2012. BFP 2-2-13. DS born 10-16-13.
TTC #2 in December 2014. BFP 12-31-14. Expecting a September baby!
I think anyone who can "afford" air conditioning, a smart phone, two cars, vacations, etc etc etc and "cannot" afford health insurance - especially when they are parents / for their kids - is beyond irresponsible.
I cannot stand seeing people driving vehicles with dogs on their laps. I see this far too often. Which makes me think a lot of people think it's ok (popular?) I don't care if your dog is tiny, or well trained, or whatever. First, the dog is a distraction and can at any moment decide to jump up to kiss you and obstruct your vision, or hop down by your feet and interfere with your brakes. Second, for those who have their windows rolled down, the dog could fall ot or jump out. When they are on your laps they are propped up higher to the level of the window and are at a greater risk of jumping or falling. Oh, and what if you ave to slam on your breaks?? Poor pup is going to fly into the windshield. I just think it's irresponsible, for the safety of other people on the road AND the dog itself.
In addition, I am a proud and responsible dog owner. Of a small dog (my profile pic). Not only is he designated to the back seat, he also has a doggy seatbelt for long trips which keeps him safe in case the breaks have to be applied.
I'm going to build off yours and say, I don't like it when people bring their dogs into the store with them....whether is Walmart, Homedepot, the mall....if your dog is not a service dog, where the blue vest, on a leash, then it shouldn't be in the store.
Mine is work related, but I work with babies so I'll go ahead and share.... Mom tries to breastfeed, baby is not getting any colostrum etc. But mom is adamant about ONLY breastfeeding, no bottle supplement. So 12 hours after birth, baby is in the NICU for low blood sugars. I can't tell you how many moms would rather have their babies poked several times for an IV to get fluids, not to mention have their heel poked every 2 to 3 hours for blood sugars, rather than give their baby a SMALL amount of formula after attempting to BF!! I am pro breast feeding, don't get me wrong, but WHYYY would you rather have your baby suffer through all that rather than give them a bottle?!?! Ugh!!!!!
How about if the hospital doesn't get all uppity? They stopped doing this in Germany and in many parts of Europe because the research showed that this was consistently unnecessary in an uncomplicated birth with live baby situation. As a result (and as part of an overarching baby-friendly hospital policy pick-up) post-birth interventions plummented, cost of care decreased, and breastfeeding rates picked up.

What I took away from this: A drive thu for Dunkin Donuts?! You're about to ingest 40,000 calories. The least you can do is walk two feet to get your fat on.
Not that I want to defend The Vag (I sooooo don't), but the parking lots at both DD's in my town are both SO tiny and there are so many people in the drive through, it is damn near impossible to back out without being mowed down. And there are only like 6 spots anyway. Drive thru all the way for this girl!

I go to a DD that is drive thru only and agree that even those that do have parking lots, most of the time (and especially during AM rush hour) it doesn't make any sense to park and get out because the lots are super tiny and the line of cars at the drive thru are blocking everything making it almost impossible to get in and out of the spots.
I HATE pink sports apparel....They are not the Pink Sox...they are the RED Sox (or White Sox). There are plenty of "girly" options in the correct team colors...but really who cares, at sports games you are not trying to be "girly" you are there to watch the game. if you are not interested don't go!
^this from a bitter Boston sports fan where our tickets are a million dollars and limited space with tons of bandwagoner fans
Ugh I cannot agree more. As an avid Baltimore sports fan, nothing p's me off more than seeing a pink Flacco jersey or pink Orioles clothes. Real fans wear the colors of their team. And although you and I may disagree on this (lol) I happen to think our Baltimore colors are awesome and why would anyone want to crap them up with pink!? I say this being a very girly person and loving almost everything else pink in the world.
I can get on board with the pink apparel being dumb for grown women...let's face it, orange and blue is flattering on everybody...but, for babies, pink is adorbs!!
And my UO would be that I disagree that pink is "adorbs" and i even get nauseous when I see baby girls in all pink. It's ridiculous that some parents don't use other colors... Ugh.
I disagree. I think there are times when buying a new car makes more financial sense. If you can finance that new car for less interest than you're collecting on an interest bearing account (stocks, whatever) then it makes more sense to finance the car than to drop all the cash at once. (I understand that stocks are unreliable, not trying to get into that discussion) Also, if you buy brand new and keep the car for the whole life of the car (assuming you follow the maintenance schedule and take care of it) instead of trading it in once you pay it off, then you could potentially be paying less per year to own a new car than to own a cheaper used car for less amount of time.
I don't think it's a good idea for just anyone, but it's possible to be financially savvy about buying a brand spankin' new car.
I haven't had coffee yet this morning, so I hope that made some sort of sense.
You do make some good points, but here's a few counterpoints.
1.If someone offers you financing at a lower % than you're making on your interest-bearing accounts, they're adding the cost of that financing into the cost of the car. No lending institution loans money at a loss to themselves.
2. When you finance the car, unless you put a large amount of money down, it depreciates faster than you pay it off. That means most people who finance a new car are "upside down" on the loan. So if something happens to the car, it's actually a financial liability. Yes, insurance can temper that loss, but really good insurance is expensive, and there's always your deductible to cover.
3. The kind of person who buys a new car is rarely the kind of person who drives it for the entire life of the car. Though you're right, if you do that, it may be an okay decision--if you didn't finance it.
My parents bought an inexpensive new car in 1999, paid cash, and have driven 240,000 miles on that car. A sound financial decision, but they're the exception not the rule.

Re: the bolded bit, seriously, I resent being put in this position, too.
When people say they're going to DD, I just assume they're getting coffee, so this confused me at first. So, yeah, FYI, Dknight, a lot of people just go to DD for their (IMO) weak, blah coffee rather than for their greasy doughnuts.
Also, some fast food places apparently only have drive-throughs? I think I've seen this, but I don't have a car so I can't say for sure.
Oh, and also-also, way to judge someone's (possible) eating choices when you know nothing about them, and throw in a little food-shaming hyperbole to boot.
I'm tired and cranky and my apparently unpopular opinion is that what other people eat is none of anyone else's business unless it's consistently unhealthy--and then it's just between them and their doctor.
I do the drive thru at DD but I didn't take offense to dKnight. I really took it as she was blasting MrEdVag for being a complete dbag and actually wasn't trying to stir another pot.

First let me start by apologizing to anyone I offended or if I hurt your feelings. I am mostly mobile, and typed that out very quickly, and obviously chose my words incorrectly. I have no problem with people memorializing their loss. Loss of any kind is painful. I was more trying to say that I didn't care for the particular way this person chose to do it. I feel like that kind of stuff is super personal, and I personally would not want strangers knowing that much about my personal life. Again - very sorry for the words chosen (and not just because of the well deserved flaming).

Am I wrong on this?
I dunno, maybe you're right? I was just annoyed at the 40,000 calories bit, both because most people tend to run in there just for coffee (I will get a doughnut to split with DH a couple of times a year, though, and I like their hot chocolate in winter better than anyplace else's) and because even if she was getting a doughnut, it's not like she was going to hoover up a couple dozen with her face. I just hate that kind of catty throwaway comment.
One UO point for me! Yesss.
Ok. Let me defend my position now. First off, I am sure there are completely valid reasons why some people use drive thrus, (ie parking constraints), but more times than not that is simply not the case.
My evidence: Last week I was driving back from Phila to DC and desperately needed to use the bathroom. We stopped at the first place that had one: A dunkin donuts. We parked. I went in. Used the loo. Bought a bagel (because that's the least I could do to show my appreciation for letting me use their toilet). And then went back outside to the car...where there was a line of 7 cars waiting to be served on the drive thru. Seven! The line spilled out onto the main road and was actually causing street traffic to back up. How many customers inside? Zero. How many parking spots? A million. Why did these people not just park and go in?
Now I know I singled out Dunkin Donuts, and I'm sorry if I have offended the DD coffee fans (it's good coffee, I agree, although I do prefer Starbucks myself), but I don't just feel this way about DD drive thrus. I feel this way about all drive thrus. I think, generally, they encourage lazy habits. The end.
Oh, and to those who thought it was a snarky comment- come off it. I was actually trying to lighten the mood a bit. Which would you rather argue about? Donuts or Loss? I choose donuts!!
How many calories do you really burn by walking into a Dunkin Donuts? It can't be 100 yards each way.

I agree with this. Also, I use drive-thrus when I can because it is convenient. If there is a long line and no cars parked then I will go in for time's sake. However, when I have a baby that I have to consider taking out of the car to walk in for a 5 minute errand I would much rather keep him situated happily in the car and use the drive-thru instead.
BTW I feel this way about the bank as well, so it doesn't come from an ingested calories stand point.
ETA: I am still waiting to find out if you seriously have no problem with never getting an oil change on leased vehicles.

It depends on the line and if I have my daughter with me. If there's no one in line, yes I'm going to use the drive through. I'm also not going to spend 5 minutes getting my kid in and out of the car if I don't have to. I'd rather spend that time eating, because clearly I'm a fatty. Haha.
And yea, seriously, do you think oil changes are just for fun?
Oh sorry, I didn't see your post. Haha, yes we will get an oil change if we absolutely need one. That being said, we live in a city, do very little driving, and usually only have a car for 2-3 years before giving it back so we rarely do need one.
Which is perfectly fine if you own the vehicle, but I have bought used cars that were death traps because the previous owners did not take care of them the way they should. Not that I think the 3000 miles recommendation is accurate, but to scoff at all maintenance work on a leased vehicle is terrible.
Also...my UO
I breathed a sigh of relief when we found out we were having a boy.
I despise when baby girls are dressed in ALL pink and their car seat, stroller, diaper bag, blankets, etc etc etc is all pink too. ::gag::
What's wrong with some purple, gray, green etc?
Why would you breath a sigh of relief? Was someone going to shackle you down and force pink crap on your daughter? Obviously it is a choice that the parents make and if you don't like it, then having a daughter and dressing her in other colors is a wonderful way to take a stand for what you believe.
As a fellow pink hater, it's not that anyone is going to force you to put pink on your child, it's that everyone generously gives you a ton of pink stuff. I am grateful either way, but the gender stereotypes kill me. It was not these extreme bluepink thing, 20 years ago. I was so happy when I started finding online stores like A Mighty Girl.
My UO, I don't think all babies are cute. I have seen some weird looking babies. And yeah most of them grow out of it or into it, but not all. I'm not saying these kids are ugly, not by any means. Just funky looking. Genetics are a cruel b!tch.
The parking thing irritates me, I've been disabled with handicap parking since I was 17. No I don't necessarily look like it, but walking can be incredibly painful. Staying home isn't an option when you need food and basic supplies, etc. Making judgements just because you can walk or you think the exercise of a parking lot isn't that bad is ignorant.
I literally have to plan sometimes what I can do in a day, and I am very aware that every step I take in one direction, I have to take in the reverse. If I walk from the back 40 of the grocery store parking lot, and then walk the store for groceries, that walk back is going to hurt. Badly.
Expectant mothers parking is similar, you don't know what those women are going through. Just because you can walk and think its silly, doesn't mean those women can, or feel up to treking across a hot, frozen, dark, etc parking lot.
Ugh.
You missed my UO last week...I already have blue, grey and green clothing items picked out from the boys section because they have cool animals, planets and dinosaurs on them. I meant, team pink was cute for little girls...but I can guarantee you, my little girl will also wear orange and blue proudly.
As sad as it is, I'm sick of people weeping over Cory Monteith's death. I hate when fans get so emotional over celebrities in general. A 29 year old friend keeps posting things on facebook, is rewatching Glee, and went to the memorial (she's in Vancouver). I can't imagine how people like that react when one of their loved ones passes.
Totally disagree with this. I've only bought new since becoming an adult.I would never pay in full because I get zero percent interest..I also have always paid well below the msrp. Financially, it makes much more sense for me to get a new car. I've priced out the different options many times. I
Exactly. If you could get 0% interest on a loan why would you pay a huge lump sum of cash for the car? By doing that, the loan company is making the interest off your money! It makes much more sense, financially, to keep that money in your own bank account where *you* would be earning the interest on it.
This exactly. I bought my new car last year with 0.65 financing. Over the course of six years I will pay a total of just over 500 in interest. Not worth it to drop over 20k in one lump sum when I'm only paying that much in interest.
I could not agree with you more!! We have a lab/chow mix and she is usually in the passenger seat if it's just one of us in the vehicle, or in the back seat if both DH & I are in the vehicle. She's very good about staying in her own spot.
Re: ~~UO~~
Yeah, I don't even...why should her child's death be a secret? Do you feel the same every time you see anything commemorating a loss? RIP stickers with praying hands? Memorial golf tournaments?

You missed my UO last week...I already have blue, grey and green clothing items picked out from the boys section because they have cool animals, planets and dinosaurs on them. I meant, team pink was cute for little girls...but I can guarantee you, my little girl will also wear orange and blue proudly.
I don't even know who this is.
This exactly. I bought my new car last year with 0.65 financing. Over the course of six years I will pay a total of just over 500 in interest. Not worth it to drop over 20k in one lump sum when I'm only paying that much in interest.
I could not agree with you more!! We have a lab/chow mix and she is usually in the passenger seat if it's just one of us in the vehicle, or in the back seat if both DH & I are in the vehicle. She's very good about staying in her own spot.
