Infertility

How much have you spent on infertility?

I was looking over all my infertility related costs this year and stressing out.  I called another infertile friend to complain about it and she shared with me that they had spend over $100,000 and still didn't have a take home baby! I felt stupid.

Anyways, it got me wondering what you have spent on your infertility and if you have coverage or not?

  • I am fortunate enough to have insurance cover IF costs. However, I still spent about 8 grand on copays and meds.

  • No coverage for infertility although my old doc did mis-code a few blood tests and squeeze them in.  We are also getting about 1/2 off my current DE IVF cycle for various reasons, that is saving us about $15,000 - $20,000!

Spent so far: just under $25,000 out of pocket and I estimate we will spend another $1,500 on our current cycle.

  • I have decent coverage but will probably spend close to 5K for everything. My insurance gives me a lifetime 20K for infertility However if it doesn't work and I have to do another fresh cycle it will cost much more.

Updated to include about $2000 on meds - so maybe $7000

    Ella - 10/19/10
    Julia and Aubrey - 4/3/14

  • We've spent around $8500 for testing, 3 TI, 2 IUI, and 1 IVF/ICSI (meds included).  We've got another IVF/ICSI coming up which would be another $4400 plus $400 for meds.  We're incredibly fortunate to have several insurance plans available to us with some IF coverage.

  • 100% OOP, so far only about $3,500. However, now embarking on IVF, so I expect the register tape to flow in the adding machine!  I'm anticipating about $16,000 for this round, depending on amount of meds needed. It's a male infertility issue, so hoping we can keep that cost to a minimum, since I do ovulate.

  • I haven't spent much on fertility treatments thus far.  I will be spending $20,000 on my first and only IVF cycle this November.  I can't afford to spend more than that.

It's frustrating that my only chance at being a mother depends on how much money I make or debt I'm willing to get into.  They say that most women get pregnant after their third cycle of IVF but I just don't have that kind of money.

  • 100% OOP for IVF for about $15,000.  Then we have a high deductible ($5,000) that we have had to meet over the past three years due to my multiple miscarriages and surgeries to figure out why I was having pain (turned out to be endometriosis after they removed my gallbladder and did a colonoscopy).  It's been crazy and sounds like we are not alone!!  It is crazy what they wont cover!!!  They wont even cover progesterone for when I am pregnant to prevent losing it.  What is that all about!!

  • I am very lucky to live in NJ, and they cover everything 100% for up to 4 IVF cycles. Since IVF 4 was a bust, I had to pay $9,000 for that cycle or else nothing else IVF related would be covered. With co-pays and a change in meds, I'm at a little over 10k. If we have to use donor eggs, it will be about another 10k in fees and that would use up our last insurance covered cycle.

First IVF cycle will be around 15,000

I identify with you, Malvagia...we are only going to be able to afford one cycle. I know you can't put a $ amount on having a baby, but there is only but so much money one can put their hands on.

Normally my insurance would pay for 2 cycles but there was past sterilization so they won't cover us.

  • About $15k on IVF #1 plus meds for a BFN.  That does not include 20% of my bilateral salpingectomy I had to have prior to starting IVF.  No infertility coverage, but luckily I got help with my surgery.

“All I can say is, it's a sort of kinship, as though there is a family tree of grief. On this branch, the lost children, on this the suicided parents, here the beloved mentally ill siblings. When something terrible happens, you discover all of the sudden that you have a new set of relatives, people with whom you can speak in the shorthand of cousins.” ― Elizabeth McCracken
