Coxsackie (hand/foot/mouth virus)

Sydney has had a 102 fever for the last day or so, so we took her to the pedi.

Doc said he thinks its Coxsackie, which is super contagious but she has NO SYMPTOMS.  WTF??????????????  He just said her throat was red.

Isn't that kind of a intense diagnosis that is given without even seeing any symptoms?  Now i have to try to keep her away from everything that Ayden can touch.

    LOL so did I!

    Hope Sydney feels better soon!

    Me too!

I have never heard of it, but maybe get a second opinion? I hate when Dr's seem to just guess at things that make your life way difficult.

  • Coxsackie is the hand, foot and mouth virus where you get nasty blisters all over.  and its really contagious.  She has NO blisters.

The extent of my medical knowledge comes from Wikipedia and/or WebMD, but according to the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coxsackie_A_virus infection is often asymptomatic, so maybe your doc isn't that far off base. Are there other environmental factors that would make your doc think that it's coxsackie?

Either way, I hope she feels better soon!

i guess just the fact that she is at daycare?  I never heard of not having symptoms, my friends kids had it and they had blisters all over, poor things!

  • Poor baby!  I caught it while I was pregnant from a kid I was babysitting and it was terrible.  It actually caused some scary symptoms in Olivia.  Warn your pregnant friends to stay away!  Are they going to do a blood test to confirm that she really has it?  It seems like quite a stretch to diagnose from just a red throat.

I hope she feels better soon!

  • It's super common in kids. Nothing to freak over. If Ayden doesn't have it now, he will get it eventually. Caleb had it last year and only symptoms were fever, grumpy and ONE sore on the inside of his lip.

    This too shall pass

  • We had an outbreak of this at LOs DC last month.  I was freaked out and read all about it.  Apparently, a fever occurs first for a couple of days and then subsides.  They get the nasty blisters after the fever which then pop. The blisters are usually in the back of the mouth, around the mouth, on the hands and feet.  Some of the babies in LOs class had a worse case than others.  A couple of the babies only hand 1 or 2 blisters while another one was covered in them. Your doctor may be right but I would give it a day or two and see what happens.
  • Oh no, you ladies scare me!
